Abernathy is a city in Hale County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is located in northwest Texas, is about 90 km from New Mexico in the west , extends into Lubbock County in the south and has an area of 3.1 km². Abernathy is on north-south trending Interstate 27 .

Abernathy was founded as a railroad town in 1909 when the Santa Fe Railroad was built from Plainview to Lubbock . The settlement was named after MG Abernathy . In 1910 it got the first post office, and in 1914 the town had 300 residents, four churches, a few shops and a bank. In 1924 it was registered as a city, and in 1926 there were already 45 shops and 1500 residents; Abernathy became known as a cotton and grain center.
In 1929 Abernathy was connected to the public electricity network and in 1934 to the water supply. Between 1933 and 1946 the population declined. Oil was first discovered in the area in 1947 and the population rose to 1962 in the early 1950s .
