Lubbock is the eleventh largest city in the US state of Texas and the county seat of Lubbock County . It is located in the northwest of the state in a region formerly known as Llano Estacado .

The county was founded in 1876, the place in 1890. Both were named after Thomas Saltus Lubbock , a Colonel in the Confederate Army and a Texas Ranger .
Lubbock acts as an economic hub ("economic hub", hence the nickname "Hub City") of the agricultural region of the South Plains , the largest contiguous cotton-growing area in the world. Due to the dry climate, intensive irrigation of the plantations is necessary, the water for this is pumped up from the Ogallala aquifer .

The Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport connects the city to Denver , Dallas , Houston , Austin and Las Vegas . The most important highway is Interstate 27 , which connects Lubbock with Amarillo .
