High school and college

Before focusing on the sport of basketball, Culver played American football and soccer . He attended Coronado High School in his hometown of Lubbock , Texas , where he already scored over 30 points per game in his senior season. After his time at high school, he received various offers for scholarships, including from top-class colleges. Ultimately, he chose the Red Raiders of Texas Tech to play.

Culver made his debut in Texas Tech's 75:50 win over South Alabama . He scored a season high on February 26, 2018 against West Virginia with 26. He also grabbed twelve rebounds in this game, marking the first double-double in his college career. As a freshman , he made an average of 11.2 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game.

After the departures of Keenan Evans and Zhaire Smith , he became the leader of his team in his junior season. On March 9, he scored a career high of 31 points in the 80:73 away win over Iowa State . In the first round of the Division I Championship against Northern Kentucky University , he contributed significantly to the progress of the Red Raiders with 29 points, eight rebounds and seven assists . When he won the next game against the Buffalo , he marked a double-double with 16 points and ten rebounds. Strong performances in the victories against Michigan and Gonzaga gave the university the first time reaching the final four . Even if he struggled with his marksmanship in the semifinals against Michigan State and only scored ten points, his team won 61:51 and moved into the final for the championship. In the final against Virginia , he could not confirm his performance from the previous games, only converted five of his 22 throws and therefore only got 15 points. The final was lost at 77:85 and after the end of the season he announced that he would register for the 2019 NBA draft . There he was selected in sixth place by the Phoenix Suns and immediately transferred to the Minnesota Timberwolves .
