Juan Alberto "Juancho" Hernangómez Geuer (born September 28, 1995 in Madrid ) is a Spanish basketball player who is currently under contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves in the NBA .

career

Juan Hernangómez began his junior career in 2007 with Las Rozas CB . In the summer of 2009, the then 13-year-old moved to Real Madrid's youth academy together with his brother Willy Hernangómez . After just one season, he left the club and went to Baloncesto Majadahonda , where he spent two seasons. In the summer of 2012, Hernangómez finally moved to the youth of CB Estudiantes .

On October 13, 2013, he made his professional debut in a league game against CB Málaga in the A-team of CB Estudiantes, in that season he made a total of three appearances in the professional squad and played the rest of the season in the club's B-team. From the 2014/15 season he was finally part of the professional squad. Hernangómez made his breakthrough in the 2015/16 season, which he finished with an average of 9.7 points and 5.7 rebounds . Although his club finished only the penultimate place in the championship, he was voted the best player in the league under the age of 22 for his individual achievements .

In the summer of 2016, Hernangómez moved to the Denver Nuggets , who had previously selected him in 15th place in the 2016 NBA draft .

National team

Hernangómez played the 2013 European Championship with Spain's U-18 national team, and the Iberians finished the tournament in third place. A year later he was part of the squad for the U-20 European Championship in Greece , where the Spaniards only failed in the final with a 57:65 against Turkey. In that tournament he played alongside his one year older brother Willy Hernangómez .

At the U-20 European Championship 2015, Hernangómez reached the final with the Iberians again, where his team lost to Serbia 64:70. He himself averaged 14.2 points and 8.5 rebounds and was chosen for his achievements in the All-Tournament Team.

His debut in the senior team celebrated Hernangómez on 8 August 2017 in preparation for the European Championship in 2017 in a game against Tunisia . He was part of the final squad of the 2017 European Championship and won the bronze medal with his country selection.

Hernangómez comes from a basketball family. His father Guillermo Hernangómez Heredero was also a professional player and started his career at Real Madrid . His mother Margarita Ivonne "Wonny" Geuer, who came from Germany but was born in Seville , played 158 games for the Spanish national team , with whom she won the gold medal at the 1993 European Basketball Championship . His older brother Willy Hernangómez is also a basketball player.
