Guillermo Gustavo "Willy" Hernangómez Geuer (born May 27, 1994 in Madrid ) is a Spanish basketball player who is under contract with the Charlotte Hornets in the NBA .

Willy Hernangómez started his junior career in 2007 at Las Rozas CB . In the summer of 2009, the then 15-year-old moved to Real Madrid's youth academy . There he went through various junior teams before he was taken over in the first squad in the 2012/13 season, but at the same time played with the B-team in the EBA, the fourth Spanish division.

On September 22nd, 2012 he celebrated his professional debut in the A-team in the semi-final of the Supercup against CAI Zaragoza , his team won the competition with a 95:84 in the final against FC Barcelona . His first appearance in the ACB league followed on October 3, and he also played three games in the Euroleague . His team reached the final of the Euroleague and won the Spanish championship, but Hernangómez himself was only used sporadically, mostly playing in the B team.

In the summer of 2013, Hernangómez switched to Cajasol Sevilla on loan . The contract, initially limited to one year, was extended for a further year in 2014. In December 2014, Hernangómez was named the best player of the day in both the Eurocup and the ACB league within a few days .

In the summer of 2015, his loan deal ended and Hernangómez returned to Real Madrid. With the "Royal" he won both the Spanish championship and the national cup the following season .

After the end of the season he signed a contract with the NBA team of the New York Knicks . Hernangómez played for the Knicks for a year and a half before he was transferred to the Charlotte Hornets in spring 2018 .

National team

Hernangómez competed with Spain's U-16 national team in the 2010 European Championship, the Iberians failed there in the game for third place against Turkey. A year later he was part of the squad for the U-18 European Championship in Poland , where the Spaniards won the gold medal with a 71:65 against Serbia. As the youngest player in the squad, he himself achieved an average of 7.3 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. In April 2012 he won the Albert Schweitzer tournament with the U-18 . Again you could prevail against the Serbs with 76:65 and Hernangómez was chosen for his good performance as the best center in the all-tournament team.

In the summer of 2012 he was again part of the squad at the U-18 European Championship and finished fifth with his team as well as at the U-19 World Cup in 2013. At the U-20 World Cup in 2014, Hernangómez failed with his team only in Final with 57:65 at Turkey, he himself averaged 12.3 points and 8.4 rebounds and was chosen as the best center in the all-tournament team for his individual performance.

In preparation for the 2014 World Cup , Hernangómez was called to the training camp of the senior national team, but was ultimately not part of the final squad. He finally made his debut for the Spanish selection on August 11, 2015 as part of the preparation for the European Basketball Championship against Belgium .

Willy Hernangómez comes from a basketball family. His father Guillermo Hernangómez Heredero was also a professional player and started his career at Real Madrid. His mother Margarita Ivonne "Wonny" Geuer, who came from Germany but was born in Seville , played 158 games for the Spanish national team , with whom she won the gold medal at the 1993 European Basketball Championship . His younger brother Juan Hernangómez is also a basketball player and plays in the NBA for the Denver Nuggets .
