The tournament was hosted by the World Basketball Federation (FIBA), the Spanish Basketball Federation and the Organizing Committee of the 2014 World Basketball Championship. For the third and last time since 1986, 24 national teams competed against each other. From 2019, 32 teams will compete against each other.
The national basketball team of the United States was the winner with a 129-92 victory in the final against the Serbian national basketball team . The USA became world champions for the fifth time and defended their 2010 title .
Choice of the organizer
The World Basketball Federation (FIBA) initiated the application process on January 10, 2008. By April 30, 2008, nine member associations expressed their interest in hosting the tournament (in official order): Spain, France, Denmark, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Italy, Greece and China. From these applications, FIBA selected three as official candidates: China, host of the 2009 Asian Cup , Italy, host of the 2007 European Women's Championship , and Spain, host of the 2007 European Championship .
On May 23, 2009, the FIBA Central Board voted on the award of the tournament during a meeting in Chicago . In the first round, the application from China was eliminated with the fewest votes; in the second, the application from Spain prevailed against the application from Italy with 11: 8 votes. This is the second time since 1986 that Spain has hosted a basketball world championship.
Venues
Six venues in six cities were selected as venues.
The preliminary round will be played in Granada (Group A), Sevilla (Group B), Barakaldo (Group C) and Las Palmas (Group D), the knockout round in Barcelona and Madrid.

Attendees
Two participants were certain without qualifying matches: Spain was automatically qualified as the host country, and the USA also received a place as the gold medal winner at the 2012 Olympic basketball tournament . The majority of the other participants (from Africa: 3 teams, America: 4, Asia: 3, Europe: 6 and Oceania: 2) were determined after the continental qualification tournaments. In addition, FIBA issued four “wild cards” to fill the remaining spaces. In February 2014, the qualified teams were distributed to the various preliminary round groups by lot.

mode
The mode of the 2014 World Cup was the same as that of the previous two finals, when 24 teams took part for the first time. In the preliminary round, six teams played against each other in four groups. The winner of a game received two points, the loser one point. If a game was tied at the end of regular time, there was extra time. The four teams with the highest points in each group qualified for the round of 16.
In case of a tie, decided:
- 1. the direct comparison
- 2. The basket quotient for the matches between teams with the same points
- 3. The basket quotient for all encounters in the group
- 4. the lot
about the placement.
After the preliminary round, the four best teams in each group competed against each other in the knockout system . In the round of 16, the group winners played against the fourth placed and the second against the third placed from the other group in the same half of the table (A / B, C / D). The halves of the table were retained until the semi-finals, so that a team from groups A / B and one from groups C / D faced each other in the final.
