Attendees
FIBA set the number of participating teams at ten: the three best teams from the 1948 Summer Olympics , the two best teams from Asia, Europe and South America, plus the organizing country, which was automatically qualified. The United States, France and Brazil, together with the organizing country Argentina, qualified for their placements at the Summer Olympics in London two years earlier. Uruguay, which had qualified by winning the South American Championship in 1949, refused to cross the Río de la Plata for political reasons . The Argentine government refused to grant Uruguayan visas to the press. Since Brazil had already qualified via the Summer Olympics, Chile and Peru moved up as third and fourth place finishers in the 1949 South American Basketball Championship . Egypt qualified by winning the European Basketball Championship in 1949 . No Asian team wanted to make the long and expensive trip to Latin America, so FIBA expanded the field to include Ecuador and two other teams from Europe: Spain and Yugoslavia. The teams were set as follows:
Preliminary round (1st phase) | Preliminary round (2nd phase) | Participation withdrawn |
---|---|---|
Preliminary round
In the preliminary round, the participating nations were divided into two groups. While four teams had to join in the first phase, the remaining six teams were only allowed to start in the second phase. If a game was tied at the end of regular time, there was extra time. The preliminary round matches of the 1st and 2nd phases were played on October 22, 23 and 25, 1950.

The winners of the first phase got into the second phase, the losers got into the hopes.

Final round
The winners of the second phase of the preliminary and hope rounds qualified for the final round. In the event of a tie in the final table, the direct comparison of the teams determined the placement. If this did not result in a decision, the basket ratio between the games was decisive. The games of the final round were played from October 27 to November 3, 1950.
