The second FIBA Basketball World Cup of men was from 23 October to 5 November 1954 in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil instead. The tournament was organized by the World Basketball Federation (FIBA). 12 national teams competed against each other.

The United States national basketball team became world champions. The Brazilian national basketball team became vice world champions . Third place went to the team from the Philippines .

The preliminary round matches of groups A to D were played from October 23 to 26, 1954. The winner of a game received two points, the loser one point. If a game was tied at the end of regular time, there was extra time. The best two teams in each group reached the final round . The third-placed team in each group reached the classification round with the games for places 9 to 12.

Uruguayan Óscar Moglia scored the most basket points of the tournament with 168 points. In a total of nine games, Moglia scored an average of 18.6 points.

In addition to the Uruguayan Óscar Moglia , the American Kirby Minter , the Filipino Carlos Loyzaga and the Brazilians Zenny de Azevedo ("Algodão") and Wlamir Marques were elected to the All-Tournament Team .
