The tournament was hosted by the World Basketball Federation (FIBA), the Turkish Basketball Federation and the 2010 Organizing Committee . For the third time (after 1986 and 2006 ) 24 national teams competed against each other. The defending champion was the Spanish national basketball team , which was eliminated in the quarterfinals.
The United States national basketball team became world champions for the fourth time. The Argentine Luis Scola scored the most basket points with 244 points. For Most Valuable Player ( Engl. "Wertvollster Player"), short-MVP, was the American Kevin Durant selected.
Award
Originally seven associations or mergers of associations applied to host the 2010 Basketball World Cup. Australia and New Zealand , Italy , Puerto Rico and Russia withdrew their applications prior to the award . When it was awarded on December 5, 2004, there were still three applicants to choose from: The former Yugoslav countries Bosnia and Herzegovina , Croatia , Serbia and Montenegro and Slovenia in a joint application, France and Turkey . The 20 members of the central management of the world basketball association FIBA were entitled to vote. In the first round, France received eight, Turkey seven and ex-Yugoslavia four votes. In the second round, Turkey received ten votes and France nine votes. Turkey had already hosted the 2001 European Basketball Championship .
Venues
Five venues in four cities were selected as venues. The group phases therefore took place in one city each, while Istanbul was the scene of the knockout rounds.
regulate
The games were played according to the official rules of the World Basketball Federation FIBA as of October 1, 2008. The extensive rule changes decided in April 2008, which u. a. provide for a three-point line further away from the basket (6.75 m instead of 6.25 m) and a rectangular zone under the basket (instead of a trapezoidal one), will only come into force after the tournament. The video evidence was used for the first time at a world championship .

Two participants were determined without qualifying games: Turkey is automatically qualified as the host country, the USA will receive a place at the World Cup for their gold medal in basketball at the 2008 Olympic Games . Another 18 participants are the best placed teams in the continental championships (from Africa : 3 teams, America : 4, Asia : 3, Europe : 6 (see: European Basketball Championship 2009 ) and Oceania : 2). In addition, on December 12, 2009, FIBA issued four wild cards to Germany, Lithuania, Lebanon and Russia. On December 15, 2009, the qualified teams were distributed to the various preliminary round groups at an event in Istanbul. The following draw was made:
| Group A (Kayseri)
 | Group B (Istanbul)
 | Group C (Ankara)

mode
In the preliminary round, six teams played against each other in four groups. The winner of a game received two points, the loser one point. If a game was tied at the end of regular time, there was extra time. The four teams with the highest points in each group qualified for the round of 16. In the event of a tie, the placement was decided by:
- the direct comparison
- the basket quotient for the matches between teams with the same points
- the basket quotient for all encounters in the group
- the lot
After the preliminary round, the four best teams in each group competed against each other in a knockout system . In the round of 16, the group winners played against the fourth placed and the second against the third placed from the other group in the same half of the table (A / B, C / D). In the quarter-finals, the two halves of the table then overlapped, so that teams from the same preliminary round group could meet again in the semi-finals at the earliest. From the quarter-finals, eliminated teams also played placement games.

Baumann himself described the 2010 World Cup as "the most successful basketball World Cup in history".
