Luis Alberto Scola Balvoa (born April 30, 1980 in Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine basketball player . He is currently under contract with the Italian record champions Olimpia Milano in the Lega Basket Serie A. Before that, he was active in the North American professional league NBA from 2007 to 2017 . Scola also plays for the Argentine national team .

Career

Scola began his career with Ferro Carril Oeste's youth team in Buenos Aires. He made his professional debut with the senior team in the 1996/97 season. In 1998 he went to the Spanish second division club Cabitel Gijón, which he helped to promote. In 1999 he signed with Tau Cerámica Vitoria , but stayed with Cabitel Gijón for another season. In the 2000/01 season Scola then played for the first time for Tau Cerámica in the ACB league .

In the 2002 NBA Draft , Scola was selected in the second round in 56th place by the San Antonio Spurs . In 2005 the Spurs tried to buy him out of Tau Cerámica. However, this could not be done. Scola therefore stayed in Spain until 2007.

On July 12, 2007, the Spurs exchanged the rights to Scola (along with Jackie Butler ) to the Houston Rockets for Vasilios Spanoulis , a future second-round draft pick and cash benefits. Just three days later, Scola signed a three-year contract with the Rockets. Before he switched to the NBA, Scola was the front runner in the ULEB Euroleague with 2,054 points ( surpassed by Marcus Brown in November 2007 ) and with 144 appearances, alongside the Italian Denis Marconato , the record holder in the most important European competition for club teams.

In the summer of 2012, the Rockets used the so-called "amnesty clause" to release Scola from his contract. Above all, the team wanted to save Scola's salary for future obligations.

In his first NBA season he was able to achieve an average of 10.3 points and 6.4 rebounds, for which he was appointed to the NBA All-Rookie First Team at the end of the season .

On July 15, 2012, the Phoenix Suns won the race for Scola and signed him. After a year with the Suns, Scola was transferred to the Indiana Pacers for Gerald Green in the summer of 2013 .

In the season 2015/16 he played for the Toronto Raptors . In the summer of 2016, he moved to the Brooklyn Nets . However, he was released after a few months. After that, he couldn't find an NBA team.

From 2017 to 2019 he played in China. First for the Shanxi Brave Dragons and in the 2018/19 season for the Shanghai Sharks.

At the Basketball World Cup in China 2019, he led his team to the final against Spain and was the crowd’s favorite. He was the third oldest player in the tournament and was among the top ten players.

Achievements and Awards

Others

At the beginning of 2008, Scola was one of a group of 105 basketball players who were nominated by the EuroLeague to identify fifty important figures in basketball in Europe and then to honor them in May 2008 in Madrid (Spain). All the nominated players played a particularly prominent role in the European Cup competitions of FIBA Europe and the EuroLeague and were each one of the particularly prominent "stars" of their national league teams.
