Denis Marconato (born July 29, 1975 in Treviso , Veneto ) is a former Italian basketball player. The 2.11 m center was active for a large part of his career for his hometown club Benetton Treviso and was instrumental in its success. From 2005 he first played in the Spanish ACB league before returning to clubs in his native Italy in 2009. After he ended his career at Treviso 2012, the successor to his home club Benetton, in 2013, he was reactivated at the beginning of 2014 at the age of 38 by the traditional first division club from Cantù. Marconato has won five Italian championships and eight national cup competitions so far, including one in Spain with FC Barcelona. With Benetton Treviso, the Italian national player, European champion in 1999 and silver medalist at the 2004 Olympic Games twice won the European Cup Winners' Cup and was in the final of the ULEB Euroleague 2002/03 .

Career

Except for the 1995/96 season, when he was loaned to the second division Floor Padova , Marconato played from 1993 to 2005 at Benetton Treviso. During this time, in addition to winning the European Cup Winners' Cup, he won four Italian championships and six Italian cup competitions. He was also in the final of the most important European club competition, the Euroleague , with Treviso in 2003 , after having already reached the semifinals of the Euroleague and the European Champions Cup in 1998 and 2002.

In 2005, Marconato moved to FC Barcelona, with whom he won the 2007 Spanish Cup . Marconato, whose strengths are primarily in the defensive area, as of 2014 he is the player with the second-most shot blocks in the history of the Euroleague, left the club after three years as the player with the most appearances at the time in the highest-ranking European club competition. After he had been under contract with the Basque first division returnee San Sebastián GBC in the 2008/09 season , Marconato returned to Italy at the end of the season and moved to Armani Jeans Milano shortly before the start of the play-offs , which, however, was the final series of the championship without a win against Montepaschi Siena. For the following season, Marconato moved to the Italian series champion in Siena , with whom he won another national double of championship and cup in 2010.

From 2010 on, Marconato initially played for the traditional club from Cantù . After losing the final series of the championship against series winner Siena in 2011, they were eliminated surprisingly early in the first play-off round a year later. The same thing happened a year later with his new club Umana Venezia Mestre from his Venetian home region. After his parent club from Treviso went bankrupt and was dissolved in 2012 , Marconato ended his career in 2013 at the beginning of the 2013/14 season at the lower-class successor club Treviso 2012 Basket. After Marco Cusin's injury , Cantù brought him back to the top Italian division at the turn of the year. He also played with the club in 2013/14 in the second most important European club competition, the Eurocup.

National team

With the national team , Marconato was able to win gold ( 1999 ), silver ( 1997 ) and bronze ( 2003 ) at European Championships . He also reached the final with Italy at the 2004 Olympic Games .
