1995 European Basketball Championship

The 1997 men's basketball championship , officially Eurobasket 1997 , took place from June 25th to July 6th, 1997 in Spain . It was the 30th European Championships. In contrast to the last tournament, this time 16 teams took part in the final round. Yugoslavia became European champion . Silver went to Italy and Russia won the bronze medal. Germany finished twelfth.

The European Basketball Championship is a biennial basketball competition between European teams that is organized by FIBA ​​Europa, the basketball association in Europe.

Venues

The games of the preliminary round and the intermediate round took place in Girona and the Pavelló Olímpic in Badalona , which with 12,500 seats was the venue for the basketball games at the 1992 Summer Olympics . The games from the quarter-finals onwards were played in Palau Sant Jordi , which is located in the Catalonia capital Barcelona . The hall, which holds 17,000 spectators, was also a venue for the 1992 Olympics.

qualification

A total of 16 teams took part in the tournament, which qualified for the tournament in different ways:

  • Yugoslavia qualified as defending champions.
  • Spain was set to host.
  • 14 participants were determined over two qualifying rounds.

Preliminary round

In the preliminary round four teams played against each other in four groups. The winner of a game received two points, the loser one point. If a game was tied at the end of regular time, there was extra time.

Intermediate round

After the preliminary round, the first three teams in each group qualified for the intermediate round. Final rounds - Barcelona

After the intermediate round, the first four teams of both groups E and F qualified for the final round. The quarter-finals were played crosswise against an opponent from the other group. Then both the winners of the quarter-finals met in the semifinals, as well as the losers in the "small semifinals". The winners of the semi-finals met in the final, the losers in the game for 3rd place. The winners of the "small semifinals" played for 5th place, the losers for 7th place.
