European basketball championship 1997 / qualification
This page describes the qualification for the 1997 European Men's Basketball Championship . A total of 40 national teams took part in the qualification for the 14 free places.

A total of 16 teams took part in the 1997 EuroBasket , which qualified for the tournament in different ways:
- Yugoslavia was automatically qualified as defending champion.
- Spain was automatically set to host.
- 14 participants were determined over two qualifying rounds.
First qualifying round
The first qualifying round was played in 3 groups (A to C). The national teams of the weaker nations took part in this. The first three of these groups qualified for the next qualifying round.

Second qualifying round (Semi Final Round)
In the second qualifying round, five groups (A to E) were played. 21 teams that were seeded for this round took part in this, as well as 9 teams that were successful in the first qualifying round. The 21 teams are the teams that were in the second qualifying round in qualifying for the European Championship 1995 or were directly qualified for the final round (Germany and Greece) minus the two teams that were directly qualified for the 1997 final round Spain and Yugoslavia. The group first and second in these groups qualified for the final round. The four best of the five thirds in the group also qualified for the finals.
