European basketball championship 2011 / qualification

This page describes the qualification for the 2011 European Basketball Championship for men. A total of 28 national teams took part in qualifying for the 14 free places. The qualification system introduced in 2005 was continued as part of the qualification for the 2011 European Basketball Championship . The teams played in a division A and a division B for the last time . In Division A, the stronger teams played for qualification for the European Championship.

A total of 24 teams took part in EuroBasket 2011 and qualified for the tournament in different ways. Originally 16 participants were planned, but at the request of the hosting Lithuanian basketball association, on the grounds of the strong European performance density, the European basketball association increased the field to 24 participants two years earlier than planned. This was published on September 5, 2010 as part of the 2010 Basketball World Cup in Turkey at a press conference in Istanbul, after all the games in the first qualifying round for the European Championship had already been completed.

• Lithuania was automatically eligible to participate as the host
• The other nine European participants in the 2010 World Cup qualified directly for EuroBasket 2011:
  •  Germany , France , Greece , Croatia , Russia , Serbia , Slovenia , Spain and Turkey        
• The other 14 participants were determined through qualifying games, twelve of them in the first (in August 2010) and two more in an additional qualifying round (in August 2011). At the beginning of the qualification it was planned that the three group winners and the two best runners-up would qualify for the final round with 16 participants. The last participant should be determined in a second qualifying round. Due to the increased number of participants in the final round, the countries in the table positions one to four as well as the two best-placed teams in the second qualifying round qualify. Thus only one of the 15 teams in FIBA ​​Europe Division A did not take part in the 2011 European Championship.
  • Originally qualified: Montenegro (Group A winner), Israel (Group A runner-up), Great Britain (Group B winner), Macedonia (Group B runner-up) and Belgium (Group C winner)     
  • qualified by increasing the number of participants: Italy (third group A), Latvia (fourth group A), Ukraine (third group B), Bosnia and Herzegovina (fourth group B), Georgia (second group C), Bulgaria (third group C) and Poland (Fourth Group C)       
  • qualified via additional qualifying round: Finland (winner) and Portugal (runner-up)  

Division A

Qualifying Round

The first qualifying round was held from August 2 to 29, 2010. In Division A , 15 teams were drawn in three groups of five and competed against each other in home and return matches. The four best teams in each group qualify for the EuroBasket 2011 .

Second qualifying round (Additional Qualifying Round)

The three bottom of the group contested a second qualifying round (Additional Qualifying Round) in August 2011 , in which the last two starters were determined.

Relegation Tournament

Since the division into divisions A and B was discontinued, the originally intended round of relegation was omitted.

Division B

In Division B only the preliminary round groups were held. Since the division into divisions was not continued, the originally planned promotion round was omitted.
