The Georgian national basketball team for men ( Georgian საქართველოს ეროვნული საკალათბურთო ნაკრები ) represents Georgia at international basketball matches.

history

The Georgian national basketball team was founded after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1992. In contrast to the Russian national team , which was allowed to take the direct successor to the successful Soviet selection , the Georgian selection first had to qualify through preliminary rounds for participation in final tournaments. This did not succeed and one slipped into the so-called Division B of the national teams in the continental association FIBA Europe . Through the naturalization of various, especially US-American players, who thus fell under less strict foreigner restrictions for players of European origin in the southern European leagues, a steady increase in talented players was gained. Of the naturalized players, however, only one player was allowed to play according to the rules of FIBA. In connection with a talented offspring, from whom Sasa Patchoulia and Nikolos Tskitishvili made the leap into the highest endowed US professional league NBA , one could in 2009 with the naturalized Tyrone Ellis , who was “recruited” by his former club coach Gordon Herbert , the Win the European Championship in Division B and advance to Division A.

This was followed by direct qualification for the final round of the 2011 European Basketball Championship . After two victories over Belgium and Ukraine , however, there was no more victory in the second round and they ended up in twelfth place, which was not enough for qualification for the 2012 Olympic Games . In qualifying for the European Championship finals in 2013 , after a home defeat against Bosnia and Herzegovina, they narrowly missed group victory , but were still qualified for the finals of the 24 participating teams. At the 2015 European Championships, they only just lost 81:85 in the round of 16 against the co-favorites from Lithuania. Georgia also took part in the 2017 European Championship.
