The Turkish national basketball team represents Turkey at international and friendly matches. The team celebrated their greatest triumphs to date when they became vice European champion at the European Championships in their own country in 2001 and vice world champion at the 2010 World Cup in their own country. Basketball is the second most popular team sport in Turkey after football .
The founder and first national coach of the Turkish national basketball team was the Armenian-born Rupen Semerciyan . Turkey was automatically qualified as host for the 2010 Basketball World Cup.
