At the Olympic Games in 1956 in the Australian metropolis of Melbourne , a basketball competition for men was held from November 22 to December 1 .

It was the fourth time since 1936 that a basketball tournament has been held at the Summer Olympics.

174 players from 15 nations determined the Olympic champion in 56 games. The game was played at West Melbourne Stadium . In the final, which was held in the Royal Exhibition Building , the United States team emerged victorious for the fourth time . The Americans defeated the Soviet Union team in the final with 89:55. Third place went to the Uruguayan team , which defeated France in the third place 71:62.

Preliminary round

The eight participants in the quarter-finals were determined in four groups: The two group winners (highlighted in green) qualified for the quarter-finals, the group third and fourth played in the placement round for ranks 9 to 15.
