Basketball at the Olympics
As early as the Olympic Games in 1904 and 1924, basketball games with the participation of American teams were part of the demonstration program. But it was only after the founding of the International Basketball Federation FIBA in 1932 that basketball could be included in the fixed program of the Summer Olympics . Men's basketball has been part of the Olympic program since the 1936 Summer Games and women's basketball since 1976 . From 2020 the streetball variant 3 × 3 basketball will be part of the Olympic program. Both a women's and a men's tournament will be held.
history
Men
The early years
The first Olympic tournament in 1936 was held outdoors on tennis courts. The Olympic tournament has been played indoors since the 1948 Games . The first seven tournaments all ended with victories for the US team. Four times in a row the finals were USA - Soviet Union.
The 70s and 80s
US dominance was broken for the first time at the 1972 Games. In a dramatic final - again USA versus USSR - the Soviet team achieved their first victory at an Olympic tournament with the last, very controversial three-second attack. The 70s and 80s were characterized by the three-way battle between the USA, the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia. At every Olympic tournament of that time, at least two of these three teams were among the top three teams, with the representatives of the USSR and the Americans winning two each and the Yugoslavs one victory.
The time of the professionals
Since the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992 , professional players from the NBA have also been allowed to take part in the Olympic Games. The first American professional team, the “ Dream Team ” with superstars such as Jordan , Bird , Malone , Johnson and Pippen won this tournament with an average difference of 44 points and without having taken a single time out . One of the successor states of Yugoslavia and the USSR, Croatia and Lithuania, occupied the following places. The US team also won the following tournaments with the exception of 2004 , when they lost in Athens in the semi-finals to the team from Argentina - the eventual winner of the tournament.
Women
Just like men's Olympic basketball, women's basketball is also under American dominance. The Americans have won seven of the ten tournaments so far, the last five in a row. The other three Olympic tournaments were won by the players from the Soviet Union, most recently in 1992 as a United Team . The team from Australia represents a new Olympic force, reaching the finals three times in a row since 2000 and winning third place in 1996 and 2012 .
Participation of the German teams
The German teams have so far participated in five Olympic tournaments. As the host of the 1936 Summer Olympics , they failed in the second consolation round and took 15th place with four other teams. The next participation took place in 1972 . Again as hosts, the German team failed in the second round to Australia and finished twelfth. After the first athletic qualification for the Games in 1984 , Detlef Schrempf's team finished 8th. The German team achieved the best placement in Barcelona in 1992 with seventh place. Detlef Schrempf was one of the five top scorers of the tournament with an average of 23.1 points. This placement was not achieved at the 2008 tournament either. Despite the participation of superstar Dirk Nowitzki , who was also the flag bearer of the German Olympic team at these games , the German team only managed tenth place. The German women's team has not yet qualified for any of the nine Olympic tournaments.
