Tennis was alreadyon the programat the 1st Olympic Games in 1896 , but was removed from the programafter the 1924 Summer Olympics . After tennis demonstration competitions were held twice in 1968 and 1984, tennis wasre-included in the programat the 1988 Summer Olympics and has been an integral part of the summer games ever since. In 2012, the mixed doubles were reintroduced.

In the years 1896, 1900, 1904, 1988 and 1992, the losers in the semi-finals shared the bronze medal. In all other years the bronze medal was played in a small final .

The Summer Olympics in 2004 in Athens , in 2008 in Beijing and 2012 in London were also part of the ATP - and WTA - world ranking .
