Table tennis

Table tennis has beenon the program of the Summer Olympics since the 1988 Olympic Games .

In 1992, two bronze medals were awarded in each competition. Due to China's dominance of the sport, the rules of the tournament were changed for the 2012 Olympics. Since then, only two participants from the same country have been allowed to play in the same competition. This means that all three medals can no longer go to the same country.

history

In 1931, the world association ITTF first came up with the idea of making table tennis an Olympic sport. In 1932 it was proposed to perform table tennis during the Winter Olympics. However, this did not find the support of ITTF President Ivor Montagu , who explicitly opposed it in 1946. It was not until his successor, Roy Evans , that table tennis became an Olympic sport in 1967. In 1977 the ITTF changed its statutes to make them compatible with the requirements of the International Olympic Committee IOC . Table tennis was then officially recognized by the IOC. In 1981 the IOC decided to organize table tennis events for the first time at the 1984 Games. After the competitions women singles, women doubles and men singles and men doubles were played in the years 1988 to 2004, the IOC decided to replace the doubles competitions with the team competition for the upcoming Olympic Games. The mixed competition was also included for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
