Table tennis

At the XXV. Olympic Games 1992 in Barcelona were four competitions in table tennis held. The venue was the Estacio del Nord Sports (formerly Nordbahnhof) from July 28th to August 6th . 40,000 spectators attended this event. Roßkopf / Fetzner won the silver medal in doubles and thus the first medal that Germany won at the Olympic table tennis competition.

Competition mode

The following changes have been made since the last Olympic Games :

  • 64 players compete in the women's singles (instead of 48)
  • only the first placed in the group matches reach the round of 16 (the second are eliminated)
  • the double competitions start with 8 groups of four (instead of 4 groups of eight)
  • 3rd and 4th place will no longer be played, two bronze medals will be awarded

German participants

Jörg Roßkopf qualified directly from Germany as 15th in the adjusted world rankings, as did Steffen Fetzner , Olga Nemes and Elke Schall via the qualification games in Bolzano in February 1992. Nicole Struse was only eligible to play in the doubles.

Men's singles

Jörg Roßkopf was first in Group E. Here he defeated Michael Hyatt (Jamaica), Gideon Joe NG (Canada) and Andrei Masunow . In the round of 16 he prevailed against Li Gun-sang (North Korea). Then he lost against the eventual winner Jan-Ove Waldner in four sets. Roßkopf was the only player in these Olympics who could win a set against Waldner.

Steffen Fetzner won Group N after victories over Takehiro Watanabe (Japan), Marcos Pinet Nunez (Chile) and Kim Song-hui (North Korea). In the last sixteen he was eliminated against the Swede Jörgen Persson .

Men's doubles

Roßkopf / Fetzner had set themselves the goal of reaching the semi-finals in advance. In this respect, the silver medal was a great success. First they prevailed in Group C against Augusto Guillermo Morales Marengo / Marcos Pinet Nunez (Chile), Nicolas Chatelain / Patrick Chila (France) and Kōji Matsushita / Hiroshi Shibutani (Japan). In the quarterfinals they defeated the Yugoslavs Slobodan Grujić / Ilija Lupulesku in three sets as well as the Koreans Kang Hee-chan / Lee Chul-seung in the semifinals . In the final they faced the Chinese Lu Lin / Wang Tao . In the first set, the Germans were already in the lead at 20:15, but lost 26:24. After the further sets 21:18, 18:21 and 21:13 they lost the decisive fifth set with 14:21.

Ladies singles

The German women failed in the group games.

Olga Nemes won in Group K against Diane Gee (USA) and Sofija Tepez (Chile), but lost to group winner and defender Hong Soon Hwa (North Korea).

Elke Schall came third in Group B. She recorded one win against Cheryl Mary Roberts (South Africa) and two losses against Alessia Arisi (Italy) and Qiao Hong (China).

Ladies doubles

Schall / Struse were eliminated in the group games. In group A they took second place. The victories over Emilia Ciosu / Adriana Năstase (Romania) and Eliana Gonzalez / Magaly Montes (Peru ) contrasted with the defeat against the later winners of the silver medal Chen Zihe / Gao Jun (China).

useful information

In contrast to the 1991 World Cup , Korea again appeared under separate flags, namely North and South Korea. Dragutin Šurbek made a comeback at the age of 45. He only competed in doubles with Zoran Primorac , where he came second in Group B and was eliminated. Adel Massaad , who was eligible to play for Egypt , was qualified, but was not allowed to participate for cost reasons.
