2004 Summer Olympics / table tennis
At the 2004 Olympic Games in the Greek capital Athens , four table tennis competitions were held.
The venue was the Galatsi Olympic Hall .
Competition mode
All competitions are held in the knockout system using four sets of wins. The bronze medal is played.
- Individual competition
Each association is allowed to register a maximum of three players. The first 16 players on the seeding list start in round three, ranks 17 to 32 of the seeding list move on in round two. During the draw, care is taken to ensure that active players from one association play against each other as late as possible.
- Double competition
Similarly, in doubles, the first 8 of the seeding list begin in round three, the ranks 9 to 16 of the seeding list in round two. Both players in a doubles must belong to the same association. Each association can register a maximum of two doubles. During the draw, the doubles from one association will be drawn into the same half, so that doubles from different associations will definitely meet in the final.
Cutting off the Germans
Men's
Jörg Roßkopf started in round 2 with a victory over Poland's Tomasz Krzeszewski. He then lost to Wang Hao 1: 4. Torben Wosik started in lap 1. Here he eliminated Mohamed Gueye (Senegal) only to loseto Trinko Keen (Netherlands). Timo Boll only started in the third round due to the seeding list. After victories over Patrick Chila (France) and Werner Schlager (Austria) he reached the quarterfinals, where he was defeated by the Swede Jan-Ove Waldner .
Hielscher / Roßkopf won against Hugo Hanashiro / Hugo Hoyama (Brazil) and lost against Joo Se-hyuk / Oh Sang-eun (South Korea). Boll / Fejer-Konnerth were eliminated after defeating Shu Arai / Ryo Yuzawa (Japan) in the round of 16 against Lee Chul Seung / Ryu Seung-min (Korea).
Ladies
Nicole Struse lost in the first round to Nanthana Komwong from Thailand . The other two German players advanced one round. Jie Schöpp won against Nikoleta Stefanova (Italy) and lost against Aya Umemura (Japan). Elke Wosik prevailed against Lay Jian Fay (Australia), then failed to Niu Jianfeng (China).
The double Struse / Wosik lost against the New Zealand siblings Li Chunli / Li Karen.

useful information
- The youngest participant was 15 year old Ai Fukuhara (Japan), the oldest was 42 year old Li Chunli (New Zealand). For men, the range ranged from 17 years (José Luyindula, Congo) to 42 years ( He Zhiwen , Spain).
- The Singapore government has promised its participants $ 500,000 for a gold medal. There should be $ 250,000 for bronze. Li Jia Wei missed these prizes when she lost in the semi-finals.
- Karl-Josef Flühr (Bad Kreuznach) was the only German referee at this TT Olympiad. He directed the women's final.
- ITTF President Adham Sharara suggested to the International Olympic Committee IOC that team fights instead of doubles should be held in table tennis at the next Summer Olympic Games.
