2000 Summer Olympics / table tennis
At the 2000 Olympic Games in the Australian metropolis of Sydney , four table tennis competitions were held.
The venue was the State Sports Center in the Sydney Olympic Park .
All gold medals went to the Chinese, as did almost all silver medals. Only the Swede Jan-Ove Waldner reached the final in the singles.
Cutting off the Germans
Men's
The furthest came Jörg Roßkopf , who after victories over Ashraf Helmy (Egypt), Yongxiang David Zhuang (USA), Peter Karlsson (Sweden) and Toshio Tasaki (Japan) reached the quarter-finals, where he lost against the Chinese Liu Guoliang . Timo Boll failed in the round of 16 to Werner Schlager (Austria) after defeating Hamad Al Hammadi (Qatar), Liu Song (Argentina) and Kim Taek-soo (South Korea). Peter Franz won in the preliminary round against Matthew Syed (England) and Jean-Patrick Sahajasein (Mauritius), but was eliminated in round 1 against Jörgen Persson (Sweden).
Since the "standard double" Roßkopf / Fetzner missed the qualification in advance, the "emergency double" Roßkopf / Boll was formed from the individual qualified German participants . This got stuck in the preliminary round: A win against Brett Clarke / Jeffrey Wayne Plumb (Australia) and the defeat against Slobodan Grujić / Ilija Lupulesku (Yugoslavia) were not enough to advance.
Ladies
Also qianhong gotsch reached the knockout stages. She won against Rinko Sakata (Japan) and Suk Eun-mi (South Korea) and lost to Chen Jing (Taiwan). Jing Tian-Zörner was eliminated immediately by Åsa Svensson (Sweden), as was Jie Schöpp by Chen Tong Feiming (Taiwan).
The Gotsch / Schöpp double survived the preliminary round with wins over Wenxiao Wang / Hong Guang Chris Xu (Canada) and Gao Chang Jun / Michelle Do (USA), but then failed against the Hungarians Csilla Bátorfi / Krisztina Tóth . Schall / Struse came just as far, winning against Tawny Ai Banh / Jasna Reed (USA) and Li Chunli / Li Karen (siblings from New Zealand) in the preliminary round and eliminated in round 1 against Li Ju / Wang Nan (China).
