Kim Taek-soo (born May 25, 1970 in Gwangju ) is a former South Korean table tennis player . He won bronze twice at the Olympics.

Kim Taek-soo holds the club in the penholder grip and attacks with the forehand using topspin .

Career

At the age of eleven, Kim Taek-soo began playing table tennis. In 1987 he took part in the World Cup for the first time . Until 2004 he was represented at 11 World Cups. He won bronze four times with the Korean team, namely in 1995 , 1997 , 2001 and 2004 . In singles he reached the semi-finals in 1991 , in doubles in 1993 (with Yoo Nam-kyu ), 1999 (with Park Sang-joon ), 2001 (with Oh Sang-eun ) and 2003 (with Oh Sang-eun). In 1995 he reached the World Cup semi-finals after defeating Wang Tao, but was subsequently disqualified for illegal substances in the surface adhesive. In 2001 Kim had seven match points in the decisive individual of the team semi-final between China and South Korea, which his opponent Liu Guozheng was able to fend off all. Particular tragedy: Liu was able to transform his first match point immediately and secure a place in the World Cup final for China.

In 1992, 1996 and 2000 he was nominated for the Summer Olympics. In 1992 he won bronze medals in singles and doubles (with Yoo Nam-kyu ). He won the Pro Tour event in 2001 in singles and in 1996 and 2002 in doubles.

The Bundesliga team TTC Zugbrücke Grenzau tried to sign the Korean for the 1997/98 season, but Kim Taek-soo did not receive any clearance from his home club. A year later, Kim Taek-soo played with the French club Caen TTC in the Champions League . Since January 2010 he has been the head coach of the Korean national team.

In October 2003 he was ranked 17th in the ITTF world rankings , the highest ever ranking was 5th (1995).

In the first half of the 90s in particular, Kim was always one of the favorites for the title at major tournaments. But he didn't succeed until 1998 when he won the men's singles at the Asian Games and defeated the top Chinese players on the way to the title. At least he could have entered the list of World Cup titleholders, but failed there three times ( 1992 , 1998 , 2000 ) in the final. He also reached the final twice (1992, 1997) at the prestigious China Open, but could not win the title. Kim was an excellent doubles player. He and his doubles partner Yoo Nam Kyu won the World Cup for men's doubles, where the world's best doubles were invited and which was only held twice (1990 and 1992).
