Table tennis world championship 2004

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 49th World Table Tennis Championships for teams took place from March 1st to 7th, 2004 in Doha ( Qatar ). The game was played in the Exhibition Center.

Overview

China won gold in both men and women. In the men's championship, defending champion China gave the German team, which surprisingly played in the final without Jörg Roßkopf, no chance in a 3-0 win. During the entire tournament, the men of China only gave up one game when Werner Schlager won against Ma Lin . In the women's category, the Chinese team won safely against Hong Kong.

German gentlemen

The German team had taken first place in the preliminary round matches in Group B by winning against Belgium (reigning vice world champion), Sweden (first World Cup / European Championship victory against this team in 35 (!) Years), Russia, co-favorites Taiwan and Hong Kong. Then she had to face China first in Group A. This game was lost 3-0. As a result, China moved into the final. The second final participant was determined by the loser of this game, Germany, having to play against the winner of the match between the runners-up. This was South Korea, which had prevailed against Sweden. A 3-1 win against South Korea then meant participation in the finals, where China clearly prevailed 3-0.

German ladies

The German women took a respectable 6th place and were thus able to qualify directly for the 1st division at the 2006 World Cup in Bremen . In the preliminary round they lost to China, South Korea and Singapore and won against Taiwan and Russia. This meant fourth place. In the placement games for ranks 5 to 8, they defeated Hungary and Russia. The subsequent 2-3 defeat against Romania led to place 6.

ITTF resolutions

The ITTF Congress (Annual General Meeting) dealt with the following requests from members:

  • The proposal by Germany and China that the server must be above head height when serving was rejected.
  • The Cook Islands and Montenegro were accepted as new members of the world association ITTF .
  • Serbia and Montenegro will have their own teams in the future.
