Table tennis world championship 2005
The 50th World Table Tennis Championships took place from April 29th to May 6th, 2005 in Shanghai ( People's Republic of China ). After 1961 and 1995, China hosted the World Table Tennis Championships for the third time . Only individual competitions were held, team competitions did not take place according to the schedule.
With the German men's doubles Timo Boll and Christian Süß , for the first time in 16 years ( Jörg Rosskopf / Steffen Fetzner became world champions in Dortmund in 1989), German athletes were able to win a medal in an individual world championship.
North Korea honored these table tennis world championships on April 23, 2005 with six postage stamps ( Michel catalog no. 4870 - 4875) and a block (no. 615) as well as a first day special cancellation . Special postmarks have been used by the Chinese Post in Shanghai and other cities in China.
Cutting off the Germans
The German players were looked after by Richard Prause , Tobias Beck and Dirk Schimmelpfennig .
Günter Höhne (Hankensbüttel) was the only German referee at this World Cup.
Men's singles
Timo Boll reachedthe round of 16after victories over João Monteiro (Portugal), Wenguan Huang (Canada) and Jörgen Persson (Sweden). Here he lost against the Chinese Liu Guozheng 3: 4. Jörg Rosskopf won against Ri Chol Guk (North Korea) and Wu Chih-Chi (Taiwan). In the third round he was eliminated from Chen Qi (China). Zoltan Fejer-Konnerth (victory over Kostadin Lengerov (Austria), Lee Jin-won (Korea), defeat against Kong Linghui (China)) and Bastian Steger (victory over Lubomir Pistej (Slovakia), Jean-Michel Saive (Belgium) gotjust as far), Loss to Lucjan Błaszczyk (Poland)). Christian Süß prevailed against Cai Xiao Li (Singapore), but then lost to the Chinese Hao Shuai . Lars Hielscher was eliminated in the first round against Segun Toriola (Nigeria).
Ladies singles
The furthest came Elke Wosik , who won against Carina Jonsson (Sweden) and Martina Safran (Slovenia), but was defeated in the third round by Guo Yue (China). Nicole Struse only survived round 1, where she prevailed against Biljana Todorovic (Slovenia). Then she lost to Sayaka Hirano (Japan). Even Kristin Silbereisen came up in round two. She knocked out Matilda Ekholm (Sweden) first, then lost to Li Jia Wei (Singapore). The end of the first round was for Tanja Hain-Hofmann (2: 5 against Pan Li-Chun (Taiwan)) and Irene Ivancan (1: 4 against Kim Mi-yong (North Korea)).
Men's doubles
Of course, the silver medal for Boll / Süß was outstanding . They won against Chang Yen Shu / Chou Tung-Yu (Taiwan), Choi Hyun Jin / Oh Sang-eun (Korea), Michael Maze / Finn Tugwell (Denmark), Lucjan Błaszczyk / Wang Zeng Yi (Poland) and the reigning Olympic champions Chen Qi / Ma Lin (China). In the final, the Chinese doubles Kong Linghui / Wang Hao was superior and won 4-1. Hielscher / Rosskopf prevailed against Chiang Hung-Chieh / Wu Chih-Chi (Taiwan), but then lost to Chiang Peng-Lung / Chuang Chih-Yuan (Taiwan). Fejer-Konnerth / Steger also reached round 2 by defeating Kirill Skatschkow / Artur Grigorjew (Russia). The French Patrick Chila / Damien Éloi were then too strong.
Ladies doubles
Struse / Silbereisen failed in the round of 16 against Lau Sui Fei / Song Ah Sim (Hong Kong) after they had prevailed against Chiu Soo Jin / Ng Sock Kim (Malaysia) and Svetlana Ganina / Irina Palina (Russia). Hain-Hofmann / Wosik won against Kasturi Chakraborty / Nandita Saha (India) and then eliminated against Bai Yang / Guo Yan (China).
Mixed
Fejer-Konnerth / Struse qualifiedfor the round of 16, where they beat the Chinese Qiu , by winning over Kaii Yoshida / Saki Man Li Kanazawa (Japan), Cheng Yinhua / Jasna Reed (USA) and Ryu Seung-min / Kim Hye Hyun (Korea) Yike / Cao Zhen lost. The three other German mixed were eliminated in round two: Steger / Wosik (win against João Monteiro / Silva Lucia (Portugal), loss against János Jakab / Mária Fazekas (Hungary)), Hielscher / Hain-Hofmann (win against Jonathan Salazar / Paula Medina (Colombia), defeat against Adrian Crișan / Otilia Bădescu (Romania)), Süß / Silbereisen (victory against Christophe Bertin / Carole Grundisch (France), defeat against Lee Jin-kwon / Kim Kyung-ah (Korea)).

Timo Boll received the fair play award because he reported an opposing edge ball to the referee in the crucial phase of the game against Liu Guozheng . In addition, the International Committee for Fair Play in Sport (CIFP) recognized this behavior and awarded Boll a prize in 2006.
