Table tennis world championship 2007

The 52nd World Table Tennis Championships took place from May 21 to 27, 2007 in Zagreb . In March 2004, Zagreb was preferred to Stockholm by the participants in the Annual General Meeting of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) . Chicago and Jeju-do had previously withdrawn their applications.

The Croatian capital benefited from hosting the European Table Tennis Championships in 2002 . It was the first time that Croatia hosted the World Table Tennis Championships .

Cutting off the Germans

The players were looked after by national coach Richard Prause , Jörg Bitzigeio was the women's coach.

Men's singles

Timo Boll defeated the Greek Kalinikos Kreanga in the round of 16 , but then retired against Ryu Seung-min . He had previously won against Thiago Monteiro (Brazil), Robert Svensson (Sweden) and Lin Ju (Dominican Republic).

Patrick Baum lost to Liu Song (Argentina, of Chinese descent) in the first round .

Jörg Roßkopf advanced one round by defeating Erik Illas (Slovenia) and then retired against Yo Kan (Japan).

For Dimitrij Ovtcharov , the first in the world rankings was Ma Lin (China). He had previously eliminated Daniel Gorak (Poland).

Bastian Steger lost to Wang Hao (China) after victories over Peter-Paul Pradeeban (Canada) and Yang Zi (Singapore).

Süß defeated Tiago Apolónia (Portugal) and Cheung Yuk (Hong Kong) and then lost to Ma Long (China).

Thomas Keinath now has Slovak citizenship and competed for Slovakia. He was eliminated in the first round against the Hungarian Peter Fazekas. In doubles with the Slovak Peter Sereda, he lost immediately to Zoran Primorac / Tan Ruiwu (Croatia).

Men's doubles

Boll / Süß reached the round of eight, where they were eliminated against Chiang Peng-Lung / Chang Yen-Shu from Taiwan. Before that they had prevailed against Safa Avci / Irfan Tavukcuoglu (Turkey), Antonín Gavlas / Petr Korbel (Czech Republic) and Zoran Primorac / Tan Ruiva (Croatia).

Baum / Ovtcharov won against the Danes Christian Larsen / Pedersen and failed in round 2 to Hao Shuai / Ma Long (China).

Roßkopf / Steger lost after beating Sas Lasan / Jan Zibrat (Slovenia) in the second round against the Poles Lucian Blaszczyk / Wang Zeng Yi.

Ladies singles

Nicole Struse failed in the last 32 to Guo Yan (China). She had previously won against Julia Necula (Romania) and Kim Jung Hyun (South Korea).

After victories against Tatiana Sorochinskaya (Ukraine) and Xu Jie (Poland), Wu Jiaduo also made it into the last 32, where she lost to future world champion Guo Yue (China).

Kristin Silbereisen was eliminated in the first round against Pan-Li Chun (Taiwan), as was Zhenqi Barthel against Hiura Reiko (Japan).

Elke Wosik survived round 1 against Fabiola Ramos (Venezuela) and then lost to Wu Xue (Dominican Republic).

Ladies doubles

Struse / Barthel reached the quarter-finals after victories over Ekaterina Levina / Saida Makhmudova (Uzbekistan), Viktoria Pavlowitch / Tatsiana Kostromina (Belarus) and Lin Ling / Lau Sui Fei (Hong Kong). Here the pair Li Jia Wei / Wang Yuegu (Singapore) was the final destination.

Wosik / Wu Jiaduo lost immediately to the Greeks Christina Fili / Ekaterina Ntoulaki.

Mixed

Steger / Silbereisen were eliminated in the first game by Bartosz Such / Marta Golota (Poland).

Süß / Wosik first won against Segun Toriola / Olufunke Oshonaike (Nigeria) and then surprisingly against the Chinese Zhang Yike / Yao Yun, but were eliminated in the next round against Joo Se-hyuk / Park Mi-young (Korea).

Ovtcharov / Barthel advanced against Žolt Pete / Eva Tapai (Serbia), but then lost to the Japanese Seiya Kishikawa / Ai Fukuhara .

Baum / Wu Jiaduo survived round 1 against Kestutis Zeimys / Inga Kardauskaite (Lithuania), only to be eliminated against Lei Zhenhua / Ding Ning (China).

  • Vladimir Samsonov receives the Richard Bergmann Fair Play Award for correcting a wrong decision by the referee in his favor in the game against Ma Lin by deliberately hitting a ball into the net. Samsonov lost this game.
  • The German TT official Hans-Jürgen Haase is presented with the ITTF Merit Award, which recognizes his services to table tennis.
  • Philately: The Post Office of Croatia honored this table tennis world championship with a postage stamp on May 21, 2007 ( Michel catalog no. 812) with an edition of 200,000 pieces, which was printed in miniature sheets of 9 stamps and the logo of the world championship.
