The 5th table tennis world championship took place from February 10th to 15th, 1931 (some sources wrongly date the World Championships to January 10th to 15th ) in Budapest (Hungary) in the Sportelet hall. This was the second time (after 1929) that Budapest hosted the World Cup.
Overview
The Hungarians dominated the tournament. They took first place in all disciplines. Among the eleven participating men's teams, the Golden Team Hungary again proved to be far superior, which the balance of 50: 2 points clearly showed.
In general, there were the same winners as in the previous world championship - with one exception: Miklós Szabados became world champion in the men's singles . In retrospect, his final win over Victor Barna was a great achievement, as it was Barna's only defeat in the six years between 1930 and 1935.
The German team took 5th place and did not end up in the lower half of the table for the first time at a World Cup. Nikita Madjaroglou had Greek citizenship, but appeared with the German team because Greece was not yet a member of the International TT Federation. In the singles he defeated László Bellák and Lajos Dávid , but then lost to Victor Barna despite 2-0 lead.
In the women's singles, Mona Müller-Rüster from Germany took second place. The first - for the fifth time in a row - was the Hungarian Mária Mednyánszky .
useful information
