Zoltán Mechlovits

Zoltán Mechlovits [ ˈzoltaːn ˈmɛʧloviʧ ] (* 1891 ; † March 25, 1951 ) was a Hungarian table tennis world champion.

Career

Mechlovits won the individual world championship at the 2nd World Cup in Stockholm in 1928 . At the age of 37, he is the oldest world champion so far (2005). In the final he was already behind his compatriot László Bellák after losing two sets in the third set by 17:20. But he managed to fend off all match points and still win the game with 3-2 sets.

In addition, Mechlovits won five gold medals with the team from Hungary. With Mária Mednyánszky he was twice world champion in mixed. At the national Hungarian championships he won four times in singles, five times in doubles and twice in mixed.

Mechlovits was a penholder player . He was involved in founding the world association ITTF . At times he was Vice President of the ITTF. At the ITTF Congress in Vienna during the 1951 World Cup , he was made an ITTF honorary member.
