The 2nd World Table Tennis Championships took place in Stockholm (Sweden) from January 25th to 29th, 1928 - although this event was already planned for 1927 , but this failed due to organizational difficulties.

The tournament began in the boxing hall in Tjärhofsgatan, but had to move to a circus due to the large number of spectators.

Nine teams were at the start. In the end, three teams were tied at the top, namely England , Austria and Hungary . The decision-making round was finally won by Hungary and was again team world champion.

Striking: The same teams as in the 1st World Cup landed on the first three places. The newly added nations Latvia and Sweden did well and took 4th and 5th place.

In the individual, the Hungarian Mária Mednyánszky defended her title. Only in the men’s category was there a new world champion in Zoltán Mechlovits .

Cutting off the Germans

The German team finished 7th again, but this time it was not last. There were victories over India (5: 4) and Wales (5: 3). Erika Metzger became vice world champion in singles and in mixed with the Hungarian Dániel Pécsi .

useful information

  • The World Cup was organized by the Swede Torsten Tegner.
  • At the ITTF Congress, the method of counting 21 points per set was made mandatory for all nations by a large majority.
