The 16th table tennis world championship took place from February 4th to 10th 1949 in Stockholm (Sweden) in the Eriksdalhallen. Germany did not participate.

Only the Hungarian Gizella Farkas managed to defend the title with a 3-2 final win against the Czech Květa Hrušková . Already in the semi-finals she was 2-0 down against Trude Pritzi , but then won the time game in the following three sets . Gizella Farkas won two more gold medals, namely in the women's doubles with the Scot Helen Elliot and in the mixed with her compatriot Ferenc Sidó .

The Englishman Johnny Leach was world champion in men's singles ahead of Bohumil Váňa . Defending champion Richard Bergmann was eliminated by Ferenc Sidó . Ivan Andreadis / František Tokár won the double competition .
