Robert Alan "Robby" Krieger (born January 8, 1946 in Los Angeles ) is an American jazz and rock guitarist. He became known as the guitarist for the US rock band The Doors in the late 1960s .

life and work

Krieger composed several pieces for The Doors , including Light My Fire , Runnin 'Blue, Love Her Madly and Touch Me . After the death of the Doors singer Jim Morrison , Krieger took over his role alongside keyboardist Ray Manzarek . However, there was no success. After the band split up in 1973, Krieger formed his own band, The Robby Krieger Band , which was disbanded after a short time. With his former Doors colleague John Densmore and Jess Roden, he formed the short-lived Butts Band the following year .

Krieger later played guitar on various recordings of Blue Öyster Cult . In the 70s and 80s he also made a name for himself as a jazz guitarist. In 1990 he performed with Eric Burdon at Ventura Beach, California . The concert previously only illegally recorded on CD, in which Doors pieces were also played, was officially released as a DVD video in 2008 under the name "Eric Burdon - Live At The Ventura Beach California" .

Together with John Densmore he collaborated with Oliver Stone for his 1991 film Doors .

In 2002 Robby Krieger formed the band together with Ray Manzarek under the name The Doors of the 21st Century due to differences of opinion between the former members . The band was later renamed Riders on the Storm , as John Densmore won the lawsuit against his former bandmates for the naming rights. In addition to Krieger and Manzarek, the group consisted of Brett Scallions (who replaced Ian Asbury as singer), Ty Dennis (drums) and Phil Chen (bass) until 2009. Since then, Manzarek and Krieger have occasionally appeared as Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger of The Doors and toured the US and Europe from May to July 2010.

Krieger had a guest appearance as "Altrocker" in an episode of the television series " A terribly nice family ". He played himself there and met the other old stars John Sebastian , Richie Havens , Peter Noone from Herman's Hermits , Mark Lindsay from Paul Revere & the Raiders and Spencer Davis .

Krieger comes from a Jewish family, but was not raised religiously because his parents were not interested in an Orthodox faith. He has a brother.

Equipment and style

Robby Krieger mainly uses Gibson SG guitars. Gibson built a signature model in his honor (Gibson SG Robby Krieger VOS with vibrato lever ). In addition, he occasionally used the Stratocaster , the Les Paul and the Gibson ES-355 . A Fender Twin Reverb provided reinforcement . Since this amplifier has a rather clear sound, Krieger also needed a Maestro Fuzzbox in order to have distortion sounds available.

Warrior's guitar playing is influenced by flamenco , as can be heard especially on the 1968 recording " Spanish Caravan ". His style is also characterized by his blues-heavy bottleneck game, which is characteristic of the piece "Moonlight Drive" (1967), for example. Latin and jazz influences form, among other things, his sweeping solo on Light My Fire (1967).

In 2011, the Rolling Stone listed Krieger as 76th of the 100 best guitarists of all time . In a list from 2003 he was ranked 91st.
