Herman's Hermits was a British beat band founded in Manchester in 1964 . The group of five around singer Peter Noone celebrated worldwide success as part of the British Invasion in the 1960s . Her best-known titles include No Milk Today , I'm into Something Good , Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter and There's a Kind of Hush .
biography
With Peter Noone , Keith Hopwood and Karl Green, the structure of the musicians came from former members of Heartbeats, a cover band founded in 1963 . The group was supplemented by Derek Leckenby and Barry Whitwam, who had previously played with the Helions and Wailers. The name of the band is a simple play on words, an (extended) alliteration of the male first name Herman and the word hermit ( English hermit, hermit ).
The group was one of the British bands that were extremely successful in the United States with the British Invasion , triggered by the Beatles in 1964 .
The formation had already made a name for themselves in the Manchester area when the producer Mickie Most noticed them and gave them a record deal . In 1964, they first recorded the song I'm into Something Good , originally by Earl-Jean . The song became a number one hit in England and reached number 13 in the United States. By the official breakup in late 1970, over 20 other hits followed. In 1965 the group sold more singles worldwide than the Beatles. Her album The Best of Herman's Hermits Vol. 1 stayed in the US charts for 105 weeks . Her biggest hit in Germany, No Milk Today , reached number two on the charts in 1966 and stayed in the top 10 for three months .
The Herman's Hermits made (like other popular groups of their time) also movies in which they played the lead role as a band. These films are When the Boys Meet the Girls (1965), Hold On! (1966) and Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter (1968). In the US , Herman's Hermits also came up with the one in the movie Hold On! The song A Must to Avoid (1966) sung under Arthur Lubin's direction and with Listen People from When the Boys Meet the Girls (1965) hit the charts. In 1968, Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter, was her last movie, in which Herman's Hermits took part in dog races with their new dog as a fictionalized version of their band.
Peter Noone separated from Herman's Hermits in late 1970. However, his intended solo career was unsuccessful, only his first single Oh You Pretty Thing briefly made it to the UK charts (No. 12). As a result, Peter Noone worked from 1973 as an actor in various TV series and as a television presenter. In 1980 he released the only album of this group with the band The Tremblers, which he founded.
The remaining band members replaced Peter Noone in 1971 by Peter Cowup (born June 29, 1944). In the same year, Cowup was again replaced by Garth Elliott, who later had to give way to singer Frank Renshaw. Between 1971 and 1978, the band released a total of seven singles, which, however, could not place in the charts. Since then the band has limited itself to appearances as an oldie band. In 1973 and 1978 (in New York's Madison Square Garden ) there was even a reunion with Peter Noone for one concert.
Even if no longer in the original line-up (Derek Leckenby died on June 4, 1994 of non-Hodgkin lymphoma ), the band was also on tour in the 2010s, including in Germany. At the same time, Peter Noone is still touring the USA and Great Britain with his own Herman's Hermits band.
