Graham Keith Gouldman (born May 10, 1946 in Broughton ( Salford ), Greater Manchester ) is a British composer and musician .

Career

The son of Jewish parents bought his first guitar in 1957 and started school that year at North Salford Secondary School. He began in Manchester in 1963 as a guitarist in beat bands and changed, among other things, from the high spots via the Planets to the Whirlwinds , with whom he recorded a first record in May 1964, until he landed with the Mockingbirds in December 1964 . They got a record deal with Columbia Records , but Gouldman's first composition For Your Love was initially rejected by the label. The Mockingbirds brought a total of 5 singles to the market from February 1965 until October 1966.

Composer for other performers

Instead of the Mockingbirds, the Yardbirds made Gouldman's first composition a million seller in March 1965 - with Columbia Records of all places. Commercial success encouraged Gouldman to write more songs for this band . After For Your Love followed Heart Full of Soul (May 1965) and Evil Hearted You (September 1965).

Other buyers of his compositions were the Hollies with Look Through Any Window (September 1965) and Bus Stop (January 1966), St. Louis Union with Behind the Door (April 1966), Herman's Hermits with Listen People (February 1966), and No Milk Today (September 1966) and East West (November 1966), Wayne Fontana with the solo ballad Pamela, Pamela (November 1966) or Jeff Beck with Tallyman (August 1967). From March 1968 he started as a bassist with Wayne Fontana & The Mindbenders, then from November 1968 he played with the Hotlegs . In 1971 he met Ramases , where he met his later bandmates from 10cc (from 1972) with Godley & Creme . With 10cc in particular, Gouldman had numerous hits in the 1970s. He stayed with this band until 1983 and after their comeback between 1992 and 1995. From 1984 to 1990 he also spent the same period with the pop duo Wax .

Gouldman also worked as a music producer for other artists; Among other things, he produced the 1981 album Pleasant Dreams by the US punk band Ramones .
