The Hollies are a British pop band formed in Manchester , northern England in the early 1960s .
history
The school friends Allan Clarke (born April 5, 1942 as Harold Allan in Salford , Lancashire ) and Graham Nash first appeared as "Two Teen". When Jeremy Levine ( rhythm guitar ), Eric Haydock (born February 3, 1942 in Burnley , Lancashire, † January 5, 2019) and drummer Don Rathbone joined them, they first called themselves "Fourtones", then "Deltas" and finally "The Hollies ". The band's name is a tribute to Buddy Holly . Levine was released from the band in 1963 after coming into conflict with the law. He was replaced by Tony Hicks, who in addition to playing the guitar, also mastered the banjo and keyboard . His voice was also far more pronounced than Levine's. After a few weeks in 1963, the drummer Don Rathbone was finally replaced by Bobby Elliott, who had played with Hicks in the band "The Dolphins".
In 1963 the band signed a record deal with Parlophone , where The Beatles were also under contract. In May 1963 they released their first single, which was also a hit. Her second single became her first Top 10 hit in the UK with the cover version Stay . After releasing three successful singles in a row in 1963, their first LP came out in 1964. From 1963 to 1970, The Hollies had 20 hits in the UK Top 40 . The group mainly recorded self-composed songs by Clarke, Hicks and Nash, some of which were listed under the pseudonym L. Ransford. In addition, the group also recorded various cover versions and also resorted to material that was offered to them by professional songwriters . In 1966, bassist Eric Haydock was replaced by Bernie Calvert, who had also played with Elliott and Hicks on The Dolphins. The Hollies- producer Ron Richards was not very happy with this change and criticized the bass playing of Calvert booklet for CD 20 Song Anthology .
In 1968 Graham Nash left the band, went to the USA and became part of Crosby, Stills and Nash . He was replaced by Terry Sylvester (born January 8, 1945 in Liverpool ), who previously u. a. was at The Swinging Blue Jeans . This new formation finally achieved third place in the English charts in 1969 with Sorry Suzanne . In the same year the LP Hollies Sing Dylan was also released , which placed at position 3 in the British album charts . The pre-release Blowin 'in the Wind reached number 8 in the Netherlands in 1968. In 1970 the group received the bronze Bravo Otto from the youth magazine Bravo through readers' polls .
At the end of 1971, Allan Clarke was temporarily replaced by the Swede Mikael Rickfors . During this time, however, neither the Hollies nor Clarke, who released two solo albums, were successful, and in July 1973 Clarke returned to the band. With another cover version, The Air That I Breathe , they made it to number 2 in the English charts and into the top 10 in the USA in 1974. The original of this song was written by Albert Hammond and Mike Hazlewood and first recorded by Phil Everly of the Everly Brothers .
Until the mid-1970s, a series of top hits brought the Hollies high record sales and international audiences. In the following decade the group became quieter and its members changed more and more frequently from then on. Graham Nash made a brief comeback with the Hollies and recorded the Supremes hits Stop in the Name of Love with them .
In mid-1988, the Hollies returned to the UK charts with the re-release of He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother , which was used by a brewery for a TV commercial , and reached number 1 . Ray Stiles, previously the bass player with Mud, was a member of the group . In 1992, The Hollies released a cover version of the Prince song Purple Rain .
In 1999 Allan Clarke withdrew from the music world and left the band. He was replaced by Carl Wayne, who died in 2004. Since then, newcomer Peter Howarth has taken on the lead vocals.
Unlike the Beatles, whose melodic style the Hollies songs often reminded of, the group remained rather reluctant to experiment with style. Instead, they relied on mostly lightweight pop-rock sound and a three-part harmony singing influenced by The Everly Brothers , which became the band's trademark.
Her best-known hits include Bus Stop , Carrie Anne , He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother , Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress and her last international chart success The Air That I Breathe (1974).
On March 15, 2010, the Hollies were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . Nash, Sylvester and Clarke were present at the presentation and on stage with some guest musicians, while the current band (with Hicks and Elliott) was indispensable because of a tour.
