If I Needed Someone ( english If I needed someone ) is a song by British band The Beatles in 1965. It appeared on the album Rubber Soul .

background

If I Needed Someone was composed by George Harrison . In addition to the version of the Beatles, a version of the Hollies appeared at the same time . Both were released in the United Kingdom on December 3, 1965. The Hollies version was released as a single. While most of the Hollies' previously released singles became top ten hits, their version of If I Needed Someone only reached the bottom half of the top 20 in the UK, which is why they self-critically described the inclusion of this song as a mistake. The Beatles recording appeared on the UK's Rubber Soul album , while Capitol Records placed the title on the US ' Yesterday and Today album , which was released in June 1966.

Recordings

The Beatles' version of If I Needed Someone was produced by George Martin , with sound engineers from Norman Smith and Ken Scott . The rhythm track for the song was recorded in Studio 2 at Abbey Road Studios in a single take on October 16, 1965 and was inserted just before midnight in a recording session that was mainly scheduled for the recordings of the new single Day Tripper .

Paul McCartney played his 1964 Rickenbacker 4001S left-handed bass while recording . Harrison recorded the distinctive, bright-sounding guitar riff on his twelve-string 1965 Rickenbacker 360/12 with a capo in the seventh fret . On the afternoon of October 18, 1965, Harrison's vocals were recorded twice , overlaid and the backing vocals by John Lennon and Paul McCartney were also sung in. Ringo Starr added a tambourine as an additional tone color. The mono mix of the title was made on October 25, 1965, the stereo mix a day later on October 26, 1965 - the day on which the Beatles were to receive their MBE medals in Buckingham Palace . Both mixes are included in the box set The Beatles in mono . In 1987 George Martin made another stereo mix for Rubber Soul's first CD release . This version is included in The Beatles Stereo Box Set .
