Emergence

Olympic Studios in Barnes, London

The album Yellow Submarine is the soundtrack album for the commercially successful cartoon of the same name by the Beatles. It wasn't released until six months after it hit theaters as the Beatles set their priorities in completing and releasing the album The BEATLES . Another reason was that George Martin wanted to re-record the film music he used. The original score by George Martin was recorded at Olympic Sound Studios , the new recording with a 41-piece orchestra took place on October 22nd and 23rd, 1968 in Abbey Road Studios (Studio 1). The sound engineer Geoff Emerick finished the instrumentals. The instrumental soundtrack was pressed onto the second page of the album, so George Martin's orchestral recordings filled half of the album.

The first side of the LP contains four previously unreleased pieces by the Beatles; the other two tracks Yellow Submarine (from the album Revolver , August 1966) and All You Need Is Love (single, July 1967) had already been released. The four "new" songs were partly older recordings, so Only a Northern Song was created while working on the album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band , the songs All Together Now and It's All Too Much were recorded for the soundtrack for recorded the film Magical Mystery Tour . Hey Bulldog was recorded in February 1968, making it the newest song on the album. Geoff Emerick mixed the songs in stereo on October 29, 1968 .

Paul McCartney said to the creation of the soundtrack: "I think if it is what Disney would become excessive and they When You Wish upon a Star wanted, I would have very much taken up, as they more into the Sgt. Pepper went direction, said we, they should take songs from us that have already been recorded [...] "

The film Yellow Submarine contains other songs that were not used for the soundtrack album, but were released on the album Yellow Submarine Songtrack in 1999 :

  1. Eleanor Rigby
  2. Love You To ( Harrison )
  3. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
  4. Think for Yourself (Harrison)
  5. Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
  6. With a Little Help from My Friends
  7. Baby you're a rich man
  8. When I'm Sixty-Four
  9. Nowhere Man

Parts of the songs from Within You Without You and A Day in the Life are also alluded to in the film.

Since buyers had to pay the full purchase price for a new Beatles album with four unreleased songs, Parlophone planned to release an EP in March 1969 with the following five songs:

page A

  1. Only a Northern Song
  2. Hey bulldog
  3. Across the universe

Side B

  1. All Together Now
  2. It's All Too Much

Across the Universe was recorded in February 1968 and was not part of the soundtrack. Since the EP was not realized, Across the Universe first appeared on December 12, 1969 on the benefit compilation album No One's Gonna Change Our World .

Yellow Submarine was the second and last album by the Beatles after the compilation album A Collection of Beatles Oldies , which did not reach number one in the British charts up to and including 1970. In the US, the album reached number 2 in the charts, as first place was occupied by the album The BEATLES . In December 1991, the album went platinum in the US for one million copies sold. No single was released from the album in Great Britain and the USA, the single All Together Now / Hey Bulldog was not released in Germany until February 1972, but it did not make it into the charts.

The album Yellow Submarine was released in the UK in a mono and a stereo version. The mono version is only a down-mixed stereo version and not its own, separate mono version, although mono mixes of the six songs of the Beatles on page 1 existed at the time of publication. These mono mixes were released on September 9, 2009 on the album Mono Masters , which is part of The Beatles in Mono box. In the USA and Germany, the album was only distributed in stereo mix from its release date in 1969.

Cover design

The design of the album cover is based on the drawings by Heinz Edelmann . A similar design was also used for the cartoon movie posters . Under the album title Yellow Submarine , the phrase “Nothing Is Real” is listed on the British and German editions of the album, while the phrase is not on the cover of the US edition.

On the back of the British and German album there is a text by the Beatles' press secretary, Derek Taylor , as well as a review by Tony Palmer of the White Album . The American album contains a memoir by Dan Davis, a fictional member of the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band , who fought the fight against the Blue Meanies with actual historical events ( Thomas Jefferson's drafting of the American Declaration of Independence , King John's signature under the Magna Charta ) compares.
