A Hard Day's Night ( English analogously: One night after a heavy day ) is the third studio album of the British group The Beatles , released in the UK on 10 July 1964th In Germany the album was released on July 9, 1964, here it had the title: Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! A Hard Day's Night and was their fourth album including the compilation album. The A Hard Day's Night includes on the first page, the soundtrack of the eponymous Beatles film (German movie title: Yeah Yeah Yeah ).

In the United States , a modified version of the album, which contains only film music, was released by United Artists on June 26, 1964. The UK version of A Hard Day's Night was released on CD on July 21, 1987 in the USA .

Emergence

Movie logo

The album was preceded by the United Artists' wish to produce a feature film with the Beatles. Movies with musicians were common at the time and were usually produced on a shoestring to capitalize on the popularity of the respective artist. In the case of the Beatles, United Artists was less interested in the grossing of the feature film than in the marketing of the film music, because Capitol Records did not own the rights to possible film music of the Beatles in North America .

After an agreement was reached between the management of the Beatles and United Artists, it was time for John Lennon and Paul McCartney to compose new pieces for the feature film. For the British album, the songs that were to be used in the film had to be ready before filming began on March 2, 1964, if possible. The rest of the songs that made up the album were recorded after filming was over. The first recordings for the soundtrack began on February 25th at Abbey Road Studios . By March 1, 1964, nine songs had been completed, two of which, I Call Your Name and Long Tall Sally , were used for an EP . The remaining songs were recorded on June 1 and 2, 1964.

Can't Buy Me Love , the first song that found its way into the feature film, was released as a single on March 20, 1964. Most of the track was recorded on January 29, 1964 in thePathé Marconi Studiosin Paris . It was the first and only time the Beatles made recordings outside of the UK. Can't Buy Me Love was composed shortly before the recording by Paul McCartney at the Hôtel George V in Paris. The piece received the final touches on February 25, 1964 in Abbey Road Studios , where the rest of the music recordings for the album took place. Also on February 25, 1964, the Lennon composition You Can't Do That was recorded, which wasfirst publishedas the B-side of Can't Buy Me Love and was placed on the second side of the album.

On February 26, 1964, John Lennon's composition I Should Have Known Better was recorded. Lennon used a harmonica as a special element, as in some of the early Beatles' pieces . The song can be seen during a scene that shows the Beatles in the baggage car of a train.

The London Pavilion Cinema shows A Hard Day's Night , 1964

The next day, another attempt to record the McCartney composition And I Love Her was on the program . The recordings that had previously been made on February 25 and 26, 1964, had not produced satisfactory results. The Beatles had initially tried a more rocky arrangement for the song, but then decided on a gentler instrumentation with acoustic guitars and bongos instead of drums. With this variant they were successful on February 27th and were then able to tackle two more songs, both of which came mostly from John Lennon: the fast Tell Me Why sung together by Lennon, McCartney and Harrison and the ballad If I Fell , die sung by Lennon and McCartney.

On March 1, 1964, I'm Happy Just to Dance with You , written by John Lennon for George Harrison, was recorded.

The feature film had no name until shortly before the end of filming. The film's weird original title supposedly came from Ringo Starr, who was known for his twisted comments. He is said to have groaned exhausted during the filming: “That's a hard day…”, when he looked out the window, he saw that it was already dark and added “… night”. Whether the sentence was really pronounced during the shooting is unclear, since John Lennon him already in his first book In his own writing used (, In His Own Write '). In any case, the statement seemed to perfectly describe the mood of the feature film, and on April 13, 1964, the title of the film was officially announced to the press. It was now up to Lennon and McCartney to write a suitable theme song. On April 16, 1964, the Beatles found themselves in the studio and began recording the song A Hard Day's Night . The vocals were shared by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. The opening chord played by George Harrison on his twelve-string Rickenbacker guitar was particularly striking . After the recording, the soundtrack was complete.

Filming for the film lasted until April 24, 1964. After a brief vacation, the Beatles began to take care of the missing songs for the album. Lennon's I'll Cry Instead was recorded on June 1, 1964 . The next day, recordings for two more Lennon compositions, Any Time at All and When I Get Home, and McCartney's Things We Said Today, followed . On June 22, 1964, the album was stereo-mixed and four songs were mono-mixed; the rest of the mono mixes were made on March 3, April 23, June 9 and 10. The single Can't Buy Me Love was mixed on February 26th (mono) and March 10th (stereo).

George Martin said of the recording technology: “The recordings of the first few years were all made on only two tracks and live, like on radio broadcasts. Four-track tape recorders then had the great advantage of being able to transfer and mix second voices or guitar solos afterwards. When we did A Hard Day's Night , we were only able to mix the basic track and then transferred the voices later. "

The Rickenbacker 360/12, a defining element of the album

The special thing about A Hard Day's Night is that for the first time on this album only original compositions by the songwriter team Lennon / McCartney can be found. In contrast to the Beatles' two previous albums, John Lennon was clearly the dominant partner. Ten of the thirteen tracks on the album - including the title track - were mainly composed by him. Another peculiarity is that Ringo Starr did not provide any singing. One element that shaped the sound of the album was George Harrison's twelve-string electric guitar, a Rickenbacker 360/12, which was used on most of the pieces and on which the concise opening chord of the title song was played.

The album was released in Germany at the same time as the British premiere of the film on July 6, 1964. Four days after the premiere of the feature film, the British album and the single A Hard Day's Night were released . Producer George Martin also released the LP Off the Beatle Track that same day , which contained orchestral versions of Beatles' pieces, including Can't Buy Me Love . Some of the orchestral pieces are also included on the film music released on June 26, 1964 in the USA.

The album A Hard Day's Night entered the UK charts at number one on July 15, 1964, where it remained for 21 weeks. It was the Beatles' third number one album in the UK. The album had over 250,000 pre-orders in the UK. It was ousted from number one position by the album Beatles for Sale . In Germany, after With the Beatles , it was the Beatles ' second album, which reached number one on the charts. The two single releases Can't Buy Me Love and A Hard Day's Night also reached number one in the UK and US charts and became the fourth and fifth number-one hits for the Beatles in Great Britain and the USA.

The album was released in a mono and a stereo version.

The mono version of the album includes other mixes of the songs I Should Have Known Better (different harmonica introduction), Tell Me Why (John Lennon's vocals were doubled in the stereo version, not so in the mono version) and If I Fell (partially different vocals by John Lennon and Paul McCartney).

Other - unused - recorded versions of the songs Can't Buy Me Love , You Can't Do That , And I Love Her , A Hard Day's Night and I'll Be Back can be found on the album Anthology 1 .

Cover design

The design and photos of the cover are from Robert Freeman . The cover shows four rows of pictures in each of which five pictures of each Beatles can be seen. The first row shows John Lennon, the second George Harrison, the third Paul McCartney, the fourth Ringo Starr.

Emergence

An album of the same name was released in the USA on June 26, 1964. It only contains music from the film of the same name. Since United Artists had financed the Beatles' first film, the US film company also got the right to distribute the soundtrack , so the seven songs on page one of the original British album and the title I'll Cry Instead were used. I'll Cry Instead was released in the US in a version that was almost twenty seconds longer. The US edition was filled with four instrumental pieces composed by Lennon / McCartney and interpreted by George Martin with his orchestra. The British album A Hard Day's Night was only released in the USA on July 21, 1987.

United Artists did not have the right to remove Beatles singles from the album, Capitol Records reserved that. United Artists released two George Martin singles from the album: And I Love Her / Ringo's Theme (This Boy) (catalog number UA 745) and A Hard Day's Night / I Should Have Known Better (catalog number UA 750). The B-side of the first single, Ringo's Theme (This Boy) , reached # 53 (A-side # 105) on the Billboard Hot 100 . George Martin's second single was less successful (A-side number 122, B-side number 111). United Artists also sold an album by George Martin and his Orchestra entitled By Popular Demand, A Hard Day's Night, Instrumental Versions of the Motion Picture Score .

A Hard Day's Night was the fourth album released in the USA. It was number 1 on the Billboard 200 in the United States from July 25 to October 30, 1964 , making it the Beatles' third number one album. In October 2000, the album was multi-platinum in the US for four million copies sold.

The album was released in a mono and a stereo version. The mono version of the album is not identical to the original British mix. The song And I Love Her contains a different mix with no doubled vocals, Any Time at All (the piano has been mixed in the background) and When I Get Home (the piano has been mixed in the foreground) also have different mixes. The stereo mix of the song A Hard Day's Night is not identical to the original British mix .

The US version of the album was also released in mono in Canada on June 26, 1964 .

Republication

From August 1980 the album was distributed by Capitol Records. In January 2014, A Hard Day's Night was released as part of the boxed CD The US Albums , it was also released separately and contains the mono and stereo versions of the album. For the albums on Box The US Albums , the remastered British mono and stereo tapes released in September 2009 were essentially used. New mixes were made for the songs And I Love Her (Mono) and I'll Cry Instead (Mono / Stereo). The album has been available as a download from iTunes since January 17, 2014 .

Cover design

United Artists released the album with a unique design of the cover . The front of the album shows four pictures, each of which shows one of the Beatles, while the upper half of the face can be seen. On the back there are another 15 photos of the individual Beatles. The photos are from Robert Freeman.
