Something New ( English Something new ) is the fifth in the United States published album of the British band The Beatles . It was released on July 20, 1964. It is the Beatles' third album to be distributed by Capitol Records . Something New was also released in Germany on September 10, 1964, here it was their fifth album.

Emergence

Since United Artists had financed the first Beatles feature film A Hard Day's Night , the film company for the USA also got the right to distribute the soundtrack , which contained the seven songs on page one of the original British album A Hard Day's Night and the title I'll Cry Contained instead of page two. But United Artists did not have the right to remove Beatles singles from the album, Capitol Records reserved that. Furthermore, Capitol Records was allowed to release songs from the album A Hard Day's Night on their own albums, as long as they did not market it as a soundtrack album.

Less than a month after the release of the soundtrack album A Hard Day's Night , Something New was marketed in the US by Capitol Records. The album contains eight songs from the British album A Hard Day's Night , with the songs Tell Me Why , I'll Cry Instead , I'm Happy Just to Dance with You and If I Fell already on the United Artists album A Hard Day's Night appeared. The album also contains two songs from the EP Long Tall Sally (Slow Down and Matchbox) and the song Komm, give me your hand sung in German .

Something New reached number two on the US Billboard 200 and stayed there for nine weeks, while another Beatles album, A Hard Day's Night , took number one. So Something New was the second album, besides Introducing ... The Beatles , which only reached number two because another Beatles album was already number one in the USA. In January 1997 the album went double-platinum in the US for two million copies.

Something New was released in a mono and a stereo version.

The stereo version contains the original British versions of the songs. I'll Cry Instead was released in the USA in a version extended by almost 20 seconds on the mono version of the album Something New . The mono version of the album also contains other mixes of the songs Any Time at All (the piano was mixed in the background), When I Get Home (the piano was mixed in the foreground) and And I Love Her (single and not doubled vocals). The German version of the album contains a slightly longer version of And I Love Her , which was re-released on March 24, 1980 on the US album The Beatles Rarities .

The album Something New was also released in Peru and Canada .

In the UK, the album was made for export in early 1965 (catalog number: CPCS-101).

Republication

The album Something New was first released on CD in November 2004 as part of the box The Capitol Albums Vol. 1 . The CD contains the mono and the stereo version of the album. In January 2014 Something New was re-released as part of the CD box The US Albums , it was also released separately and again contains the mono and stereo versions of the album. While the original submasters from Capitol Records and not the original masters from Abbey Road Studios were used in the boxes The Capitol Albums Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 , the albums in The US Albums Box were essentially remastered in September 2009 by the British Mono and stereo tapes used. New mixes were made for the songs Any Time at All (Mono), When I Get Home (Mono), And I Love Her (Mono) and I'll Cry Instead (Mono).
