(2014)

The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963 is a compilation album by the British band The Beatles , which was released exclusively on iTunes on December 17, 2013 . It is the third Beatles album that was released virtually - no longer on a physical data carrier - and contains a total of 59 unreleased recordings by the band from 1963. The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963 is the eighth album of the Beatles after their separation , contains previously unpublished recording material.

The Playhouse Theater in London

The release of the album has copyright reasons. According to European copyright law, the copyright of musical works expires 70 years after their publication. However, the copyright of unpublished works expires 50 years after their creation. All tracks on the album were created in 1963 and were previously unpublished, so that their copyright would have expired on January 1, 2014. To prevent this, the works were published to extend their copyright to 70 years.

The album contains previously unreleased material: 15 studio recordings, two demo recordings and 42 recordings made by the Beatles for the BBC . The studio recordings are discarded takes of the songs There's a Place , Do You Want to Know a Secret , A Taste of Honey , I Saw Her Standing There , Misery , From Me to You , Thank You Girl , Hold Me Tight , One After 909 and Money (That's What I Want) , which were not used for the album Anthology 1 .

The songs from the BBC recordings have already been released in other recording versions on the two albums Live at the BBC and On Air - Live at the BBC Volume 2 . The Beatles' demo recordings were later released by other artists: Bad to Me by Billy J. Kramer & the Dakotas and I'm in Love by The Fourmost . All the songs on the album were previously available on various bootlegs .

It is not documented who produced the album, nor who selected, technically edited or mixed the songs. But it is likely that the same team was responsible for the BBC recordings that had already reworked the recordings for the two albums Live at the BBC and On Air - Live at the BBC Volume 2 in 2013.

In total, the Beatles took part in 53 radio programs on the BBC. 275 recordings of 89 tracks (including the From Us to You variation ) were broadcast. On the double CD Live at the BBC , released in November 1994, there are 56 tracks selected by George Martin , On Air - Live at the BBC Volume 2 contains a further 39 BBC recordings (as well as a studio outtake ), each with an additional song on Anthology 1 and the EP Baby It's You , a further 42 tracks are on The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963 , so that a total of 139 songs from the BBC recordings were released.

The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963 was released shortly before the end of the year on December 17, 2013 exclusively as a digital music download exclusively from iTunes . It was the Beatles' third virtual album after Anthology Highlights and Tomorrow Never Knows . The publication was not preceded by any announcement or advertising; and Universal declined to comment on the publication. The album did not become a commercial success, one of the reasons may have been the recording company's release policy.

There was no legal release on CD , but the album was illegally pressed on bootlegs.

In the following years, no further compilation album was released that contains similar unpublished material for the years from 1964 onwards. Starting in 2017, extensive bonus material was added with the re-releases for the 50th anniversary of the albums Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band , The Beatles and Abbey Road .
