background

John Lennon and Paul McCartney composed the song on January 26, 1963 while touring with Helen Shapiro at King's Hall in Stoke-on-Trent . The two composers offered the song to Helen Shapiro, but their manager Norrie Paramor rejected Misery because of the lyrics. Kenny Lynch, who was also on this tour, accepted the offer, sang the song while the tour was still on and released his own version on a single by Misery , making Lynch the first artist to record a cover version of a Lennon / McCartney song .
