Yesterday and Today ( English Yesterday and today ) is twelfth in the United States published album of the British band The Beatles . It was released on June 20, 1966. It is the Beatles' tenth album to be distributed by Capitol Records .

It was best known for its withdrawn cover , which showed the band dressed in meat smocks and draped with pieces of meat and broken toy dolls.

Emergence

Until 1966, the original British albums were not produced in the USA; instead, independent studio albums were compiled and titled, which in turn were not released in Great Britain, but partly in Germany.

The album Yesterday and Today was never released in the UK either, it was the ninth studio album released in the US by Capitol Records ( Introducing… The Beatles was released by Vee-Jay Records and A Hard Day's Night was released by United Artists , The Beatles' Story is a documentary album) and reached number one on the US charts there, where it stayed for five weeks, making it the eighth number one album there. In January 1997 the album went double-platinum in the US for two million copies.

The Beatles - Yesterday ( US single)

The album contains a selection of previously unreleased songs or songs that were previously only available on singles. In the USA, the single Yesterday / Act Naturally was released on September 13th , both originally from the British Beatles album Help! , the single became the ninth number one hit on the US charts. The US single Nowhere Man / What Goes On? as well as the songs Drive My Car and If I Needed Someone come from the British Rubber Soul album. There were also the single Day Tripper / We Can Work It Out , which was previously the tenth number one hit in the US, as well as the songs I'm Only Sleeping , Doctor Robert and And Your Bird Can Sing , which were only released in August 1966 should be heard on the UK edition of Revolver .

The album Yesterday and Today was released in a mono and a stereo version. The mono versions of the songs I'm Only Sleeping (different mix of the backwards played guitar), Doctor Robert and And Your Bird Can Sing (the clapping of the hands has been mixed up and the guitar in the background) have a different mix than the British mono versions. These mono mixes were made on May 12, 1966 by George Martin and Geoff Emerick .

The stereo versions of Day Tripper (different stereo image of the guitars at the beginning of the song), We Can Work It Out (different stereo image of the harmonium), I'm Only Sleeping (different mix of the guitar played backwards), and Doctor Robert (different mix at the end of the song) also contain separate mixes and are not identical to the British mixes. The last two songs were mixed on May 20, 1966.

The album was also released in Canada on June 20, 1966 , in Mexico in the summer of 1966 and in Japan on October 25, 1970 .

Cover design

A photo of the band that was taken during a photo session in early 1966 first appeared on the cover . The photographer was Robert Whitaker . It showed the four smiling Beatles in meat smocks. Chunks of meat were spread over the laps and shoulders of the musicians. In addition, parts of toy dolls can be seen in the photo. The album was pressed with this cover in an edition of 750,000 copies. Advance copies have been sent to record dealers, journalists and disc jockeys. They immediately criticized the cover heavily. It has been described as tasteless and grotesque. As a result, the record company Capitol Records had the album recalled completely. The record company originally wanted to have all record covers destroyed, but in view of the large number of album covers already produced, decided to stick another cover over the disputed covers in order to save costs. The new cover shows the four Beatles and a large suitcase. The album was released on June 20, 1966 in this new design.

Since then, copies with the original "Butcher cover" have been very rare. 2006 a sealed copy generated sales price of around 39,000  dollars .

Commenting on the cover, John Lennon said, “I don't like being tied to anything and we were expected to be angels. I wanted to show that we knew what was going on in the world, and I think I did my best of all of us to get the cover out. I really wanted the pictures to break our good image. "

Paul McCartney: “That didn't seem particularly offensive to us. It was just dolls and a lot of meat. I'm not sure what he [Robert Whitaker] was trying to say, but it seemed a little more original to us than the things we were supposed to do for other people. And we liked it - we found it extraordinary and shocking, but we didn't foresee all the associations it aroused. "

Ringo Starr: "We loved the cover because we were nice guys 'Let's do something like that!'"

In retrospect, George Harrison was very critical of the cover: “I thought it was gross, and I thought it was stupid. Sometimes we did pretty stupid things that we thought were cool or hip when in truth they were just stupid, and it was like that this time too. "

The American compilation album Rarities was released in March 1980, and the butcher cover was reproduced on the inside of the flip cover.

In June 1986, the single paperback Writer / Rain was re-released as a picture disc in Great Britain , on the back of which a photo of the Butchercover photo session was used.
