Rarities ( English rarities ) is the fifth compilation album of the British group The Beatles after their separation, which contains previously published studio recordings that are not included on the regular British studio albums. The album was released on October 12, 1979 in Great Britain and Germany. In the US , the album was not released separately as a single album.

Emergence

The album was initially part of a Box The Beatles Collection , which was released in December 1978. In addition to the Beatles' British studio albums, Rarities - with the note "Sampler Record - Not For Sale" on the back - contributed significantly to the attractiveness of this collection. The box did not contain the American album Magical Mystery Tour .

The US version of the Rarities album (catalog number: Capitol SPRO 8969) differed from the British version (catalog number: Parlophone PSLP 261), because instead of the German versions of She loves you and Come on, give me your hand, the original English versions were used were.

After copies of rarities were traded individually at collector's prices despite the “ban on retailers” , the album was released in October 1979 as a single edition in Europe, but not in the USA. The compilation of the album came from Colin Miles and Mike Heatley.

The album begins with the first studio recording of Across the Universe (the so-called "Wildlife Version"), recorded in February 1968 , which until then had only been released in December 1969 as a contribution by the Beatles to the benefit album for WWF No One's Gonna Change Our World and was therefore a real rarity.

Nine other songs on Rarities were known as single - B-sides , four songs are from the EP Long Tall Sally . While the single B-sides are not included on any British album, the four songs from the EP Long Tall Sally were first used for the double album Rock 'n' Roll Music . Bad Boy was first released in the UK in December 1966 on the album A Collection of Beatles Oldies .

The album Rarities does not include the following songs, which are also not on a British studio album, but on the two compilation albums 1962–1966 and 1967–1970 :

The single version Love Me Do has not been released on any Beatles album to date and appeared for the first time on the US version of Rarities .

For the US market, in addition to Across the Universe, the two single B-sides The Inner Light and You Know My Name (Look Up the Number) appeared on a US album for the first time.

With Rarities , these three titles appeared for the first time on an LP in Great Britain, just like She loves you and Come, give me your hand , the German sung versions of She Loves You and I Want to Hold Your Hand .

All songs on the album appeared later on the two editions of Past Masters , which have replaced Rarities in terms of content, also with regard to their completeness, since these compilation albums include all the songs that are not on the British studio albums.

In March 1980, Capitol Records released a completely new selection under the same title instead of the British version of Rarities , which only contained four of the previous titles.

Republication

The album Rarities has not yet been legally released on CD .

Cover design

The authorship of the cover design is not documented. The cover design was simple; the dark blue cover with gold lettering continued to lean against the external appearance of The Beatles Collection and was not illustrated.

Detailed explanations of the individual recordings by Hugh Fielder, Sounds magazine , took up a good half of the back of the record cover . In this text Fiedler claims among other things: “Only true Beatles followers could claim to have more than half the tracks on this album. And only die-hard fanatics could boast over eighty percent. " ('Only true Beatles fans could claim to have more than half the tracks on this album. And only die-hard fanatics could boast of having over eighty percent.').

Rarities is the fifth compilation album by the British group The Beatles after they split up. It contains previously released studio recordings as well as two newly made mixes that are not or are not included in these versions on the regular US studio albums by Capitol Records . The album was released on March 24, 1980 in the USA. In the UK and Germany the album was not released in this version.

Emergence

In the USA, Capitol Records planned in November 1979 to release the American version of Rarities , which was in the Box The Beatles Collection ( the original versions were used instead of the German versions of Sie liebe dich and Come, give me your hand ). The album was first pressed (catalog number: SN 12009) in October 1979, but it was not published.

In 1979 a bootleg appeared in the USA with Collectors Items , which had a catalog number for promotional releases from Capitol Records . The first version of the album Collectors Items (catalog number: SPRO 9462) had the song I'm Down in the track list , this was replaced by Paperback Writer in the second version of Collectors Items (catalog number: SPRO 9463) . Whether this album, which essentially contains unknown and rare mixes of songs that have already been released, was originally prepared or planned by Capitol Records cannot be proven.

In March 1980, Capitol Records released a standalone version of the album Rarities compiled by Randall Davis , which was similar to the album Collectors Items and offered "rarities" for US buyers:

  1. Love Me Do
This version is theBritish single release recordedwith Ringo Starr on drums. In the USA only the British LP version with Andy White on drums has been releasedso far.
  2. Misery
was originally Misery in the US on the Vee-Jay Records -Langspielplatte Introducing ... The Beatles released. The song first appeared on a Capitol Records album, remixed here. The British first release was on the album Please Please Me .
  3. There's a Place
Originally There's a Place in the US on the Vee-Jay Records LP Introducing ... The Beatles released. Here the song appeared on a Capitol Records album, it was remixed. The British first release was on the album Please Please Me .
  4. She loves you
On May 21, 1964 the single She loves you / I'll Get You was releasedin the USA on the Swan label, while I'll Get You is also on the American album The Beatles' Second Album , was She loves you the first time at a Capitol Records album the Beatles released.
  5. And I Love Her
The American mix of And I Love Her is not identical to the British one. But the German version of the song from the album Something New was used , it contains a slightly longer version of And I Love Her , based on the British mix.
  6. Help!
Here the British single version of the song Help! which has a different vocals than the US-American LP version.
  7. I'm Only Sleeping
The song I'm Only Sleeping was first released in the USAin a different mixon the album Yesterday and Today . Theoriginal British version was usedfor the album Rarities , with the vocals being more centered here.
  8. I Am the Walrus
for the album was a new version of I Am the Walrus by the engineers made John Palladino and George Irwin by the British stereo version of the EP Magical Mystery Tour joined with the US Mono Single Version.
  9. Penny Lane
For the first time a stereoversionof Penny Lane was released in the USA, a short recorded sequence of a piccolo trumpet was added , which was previously used exclusively for the US mono promotional single. Editing was done by sound engineers John Palladino and George Irwin.
  10. Helter Skelter
No monoversion ofthe album The Beatles was releasedin the USA. The mono version of Helter Skelter is clearly audible from the stereo version.
  11. Don't Pass Me By
The mono version Don't Pass Me By differs clearly from the stereo version.
  12. The Inner Light
The song The Inner Light is on the UK version of Rarities .
  13. Across the Universe
The song Across the Universe from the album No One's Gonna Change Our World (benefit compilation album ) is on the UK version of Rarities .
  14. You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)
The song You Know My Name (Look Up the Number) is also on the UK version of Rarities .
  15. Sgt.Pepper Inner Groove
While the needle of the record player slides over the groove on the second LP side of the album Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band , a high-pitched whistle of 15 kHz can be heard on early pressings  , which should arouse the attention of listening dogs. In the ( concentric ) end
groove itself there is the hidden title Sgt. Pepper's Inner Groove , which itself only lasts about two seconds, but is repeated indefinitely (only on manually operated record players ). Some claim that the phrase “Will Paul return as superman?” Is played backwards . to hear (see: Paul is dead ), others hear the sentence “We'll fuck you like the supermen”. In the 1997 biography of Barry Miles, McCartney took up this point and told of people who had complained to him about the "messes" in the outlet groove. He made it clear that the sentence he remembered was “Couldn't really be any other”. The whistle and the empty groove were omitted in later pressings or were added as a normal track after A Day in the Life . Sgt. Pepper's Inner Groove was not pressed on the US version of the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album .

The US version of Rarities was commercially more successful than the British version, and in January 1997 the album was awarded gold in the US for 500,000 copies sold.

Republication

The US album Rarities has not yet been released legally on CD .

Cover design

The design of the folding cover comes from Roy Kohara and Henry E. Marquez. The notes on the individual songs were written by Randall Davis. Rare photos of the Beatles as well as the butcher cover of the album Yesterday and Today are printed on the inside of the flip cover .
