On Air - Live at the BBC Volume 2 The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963
(2013)

On Air - Live at the BBC Volume 2 ( English On Air - Live at the BBC Part 2 ) is the second compilation album of a total of two double albums of the British group The Beatles , the live recordings of the group , which in productions for radio broadcasts for the British broadcaster BBC originated in the years 1962 to 1965. The album was released on November 8, 2013 in Germany and Great Britain and on November 11, 2013 in the USA. The first BBC album Live at the BBC was released 19 years earlier on November 28, 1994.

On Air - Live at the BBC Volume 2 is the seventh album by the Beatles, which after their separation contains previously unreleased recording material.

On March 7, 1962, the Beatles' three-year series of regular radio concerts for the BBC began with an appearance on Teenager's Turn - Here We Go . The Beatles' last recordings for the BBC were made on May 26, 1965 in London's Piccadilly Studios . The program was broadcast under the title The Beatles (Invite You to Take a Ticket to Ride) on June 7, 1965.

In total, the Beatles took part in 53 radio programs on the BBC. 275 recordings of 89 tracks (including the variation From Us to You ) were broadcast. Of the 89 titles, 32 songs were compositions by John Lennon and Paul McCartney . The remaining pieces were cover versions from different musical styles, most of which came from the rhythm and blues area. The Beatles never recorded 35 of these covers for any of their studio albums.

On the double CD Live at the BBC , released in November 1994, there are 56 tracks selected by George Martin , 30 of which were previously unpublished, so that six songs have not been considered for the album to date.

In November 1995, Lend Me Your Comb was released on the album Anthology 1 .

The album On Air - Live at the BBC Volume 2 consists of a total of 40 music recordings, including 22 previously unreleased songs from BBC recordings by the Beatles and 23 language contributions. Includes three songs whose Beatles versions were previously unreleased: I'm Talking About You, Beautiful Dreamer, and Happy Birthday Dear Saturday Club . The remaining seven titles they recorded for the BBC have not yet been officially / legally released:

Foreign compositions:

  1. Besame Mucho ( Consuelo Velázquez , Sunny Skylar )
  2. Dream Baby ( Cindy Walker )
  3. A Picture of You ( Joe Brown )

The three songs listed were recorded in 1962 and have not been officially released to date due to the poor sound quality.

Lennon / McCartney compositions:

  1. I call your name
  2. I should have known better
  3. I'm happy just to dance with you
  4. The Night Before

Four other, previously unpublished jingles or short topics were recorded for the BBC:

  1. Beatles Crimble Medley (five Beatles singles were briefly sung)
  2. Pop Goes the Beatles
  3. Side by side
  4. Whit Monday to You

In addition, the track Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport was recorded with Rolf Harris , which has remained unreleased and is only available on bootlegs.

In addition, the album On Air - Live at the BBC Volume 2 contains in- depth interviews with John Lennon , George Harrison , Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney , which were originally written in November 1965 and May 1966 as part of the Pop Profile series .

A so-called “studio outtake ” of the song I Feel Fine is also included. Basically, the Beatles could only play their material live for the BBC. In individual cases, the recordings were edited afterwards. Lennon re- recorded his vocals for the recording of I Feel Fine . On On Air - Live at the BBC Volume 2 is to listen to the original recording, while on the album Live at the BBC same recording with Lennon doubled vocals can be heard.

13 songs of the album (Medley: Kansas City / Hey Hey Hey Hey!! , Lucille , Memphis, Tennessee , Glad All Over , I Saw Her Standing There , I Got a Woman , Sure To Fall [In Love with You] , Till There Was You , Roll Over Beethoven , The Hippy Hippy Shake , Honey Don't , I Feel Fine and Long Tall Sally) were already included in other recordings on Live at the BBC , Lend Me Your Comb is also in a different version on Anthology 1 , the album also contains two songs (I'll Follow the Sun and Boys) from the EP Baby It's You , which was released in March 1995. Devil in Her Heart can also be found in a different version on the EP Baby It's You .

The album was compiled and produced by Kevin Howlett, Mike Heatley and Jeff Jones. On Air - Live at the BBC Volume 2 was mastered at London's Abbey Road Studios by Guy Massey and Alex Wharton; Simon Gibson was responsible for the audio restoration.

At the same time, a cardboard slipcase with the albums On Air - Live at the BBC Volume 2 and Live at the BBC was released.

Unused recorded versions of songs can be found on the album The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963 .

Cover design

The cardboard album cover was designed by Melanie Fordyce and Stuart Crouch. The cover photo was by Dezo Hoffman and was taken on July 2, 1963 on Guildford Street in London. The photo was technically edited and changed afterwards.

The introductions for the 48-page illustrated CD booklet were written by Paul McCartney and Kevin Howlett, the notes on the individual songs were also written by Kevin Howlett.

reception

Arnold Hohmann says in a review of the WAZ that the enthusiasm of the Beatles on the album "good comes across." However, he complains about the selection of titles, which, in contrast to the previous album, contains little new, and the sometimes "questionable sound quality". Stephen Thomas Erlewine from the music portal Allmusic praises the combination of interview and music contributions on the album and also emphasizes the sometimes enthusiastic enthusiasm of the band. Overall, it awards four out of five possible points.
