The US Albums is a compilation of 13 American compilation albums by the British music group The Beatles . The box was released on January 17, 2014 in Germany, January 20 in the UK and January 21, 2014 in the USA.
prehistory
After Capitol Records had turned down the offer to take over the EMI distribution rights for the USA for the Beatles, Vee-Jay Records signed a contract with the Beatles, which initially did not lead to any commercial success.
In December 1963, Brian Epstein , the Beatles' manager, signed a recording deal with Capitol Records for future Beatles releases. On December 26, 1963, the Beatles' first single, I Want to Hold Your Hand / I Saw Her Standing There, was released on Capitol Records. The single rose to number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100 on January 18, 1964. Two weeks later, I Want to Hold Your Hand topped the charts. It was the Beatles' commercial breakthrough in the United States. On January 10, 1964, the album Introducing… The Beatles by Vee-Jay Records was released in the USA , ten days later the album Meet the Beatles! . On April 10, 1964, the third album, The Beatles' Second Album , followed, which Capitol Records saw as the second album by the Beatles.
While in the UK the album format could contain 14 songs, in the US twelve or fewer songs were the rule for an album. Furthermore, in the USA successful singles of the Beatles were added to the studio albums, in contrast to Great Britain, so that a number of songs remained, which were then used for "new" albums. From The Beatles' Second Album , Capitol Records began to publish only eleven songs on their Beatles compilation albums instead of twelve in order to save license fees.
A Hard Day's Night followed on June 26, 1964 ; it only contains music from the film of the same name. Since United Artists had financed the Beatles' first film, the US film company also got the right to distribute the soundtrack , so the seven songs on page one of the original British album and the title I'll Cry Instead were used. Capitol Records was allowed to release songs from the album A Hard Day's Night on their own albums as long as they did not market it as a soundtrack album, so on July 20, 1964 the album Something New was released. Shortly before Christmas 1964, Capitol Records decided to release Beatles '65 , another stand-alone album, largely based on the British album Beatles for Sale .
A total of six Beatles albums, which were released by Capitol Records, were released in the USA in 1964, including the documentary album The Beatles' Story .
On March 22, 1965, a replacement for the album Introducing ... The Beatles , entitled The Early Beatles , was released, as Vee-Jay Records was only allowed to publish Beatles records until October 15, 1964 for legal reasons. The album Beatles VI was released on June 14, 1965 , it contains the six songs from the British album Beatles for Sale that did not appear on the album Beatles '65 , the album also contains three songs from the British album Help! . In the USA, the American version of the album Help! Was released on August 13, 1965 . . In contrast to the British version, this album only contains music from the film of the same name, the seven songs from the first page of the British album Help! , as well as the instrumentals From Me to You Fantasy , In the Tyrol , Another Hard Day's Night , The Bitter End / You Can't Do That and The Chase . The instrumental songs were not recorded by the Beatles or George Martin , but by Ken Thorne .
The US version of Rubber Soul was released on December 6, 1965 and contains only twelve songs, two of which, I've Just Seen a Face and It's Only Love , were already on the UK release of the album Help! had been published. The missing tracks ( Drive My Car , Nowhere Man , What Goes On and If I Needed Someone) were only released in June 1966 on the album Yesterday and Today , which was compiled for the US market, and includes a selection from the US to date unpublished songs or songs that were previously only available on singles.
The US version of Revolver contains only eleven instead of 14 songs, as three tracks, at the request of Capitol Records, from the British original I'm Only Sleeping , And Your Bird Can Sing and Doctor Robert are already on the US album Yesterday and Today .
In the US, the studio albums Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967), The Beatles (1968), Yellow Submarine (1969), Abbey Road (1969) and Let It Be (1970) were taken over by Capitol Records. Capitol Records put together two more compilation albums until the Beatles' official separation in April 1970 .
In November 1967, Magical Mystery Tour appeared in the USA because Capitol Records did not agree with an EP release, as in Europe. The missing titles for an album release were supplemented by five songs that had previously only been released as a single in 1967. The album was added to the Beatles' core catalog from 1987 with the first CD release of the albums.
Hey Jude was released in February 1970 , it contains songs that had not previously appeared on a Capitol Records album released in the USA.
With the first legal release of the Beatles albums in CD format between February 26 and October 20, 1987, EMI decided that only the twelve British studio albums would be produced worldwide, and the US compilation album Magical Mystery Tour , as already mentioned, added to the Beatles' core catalog.
On November 15, 2004 the box The Capitol Albums Vol. 1 was released, which contains the following four American albums, which were first legally released on CD:
The four albums were originally released in 1964.
In April 2006 the box The Capitol Albums Vol. 2 was released , which contains the following four albums from 1965:

Since the American album Magical Mystery Tour had been added to the Beatles' core catalog since 1987, it was not included in the box, nor was Introducing… The Beatles by Vee-Jay Records . A Hard Day's Night , originally released by United Artists , was distributed by Capitol Records from 1980 and could therefore be added to the box.
The original remastering was done by Paul Hicks, Sean Magee, Guy Massey, Sam Okell, Steve Rooke and Greg Calbi. The master tapes for the albums were compiled by Greg Calbi in 2013 at Sterling Sound Studios in New York . The sound quality was supervised by Steve Berkowitz, Jeff Jones was named as executive producer of the box.
The albums, except for The Beatles' Story and Hey Jude , had mono and stereo mixes. All albums had their original covers and inner covers as replicas in cardboard CD covers, and the CDs had labels from Capitol Records and on A Hard Day's Night from United Artists . In addition to The Beatles' Story , the box's CD albums were also available separately. The box and the individual albums have been available for download from iTunes since January 17, 2014 .
The mixes of the albums
Some of the original mixdowns were initiated in the 1960s by Dave Dexter, Jr., who was also an additional producer on the albums Something New , Beatles '65 and Help! was performed.
While the original submasters from Capitol Records and not the original masters from Abbey Road Studios were used for the boxes The Capitol Albums Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, the British albums released in September 2009 were essentially remastered for the albums in The US Albums Box Ribbons used. The American mixes made in the 1960s have been reconstructed. The Duophonic stereo mixes (fake stereo) were replaced by British stereo mixes and the independent US mono mixes (downmixed British stereo version) were replaced by the British mono versions.
In the production of Duophonic stereo mixes in the USA in the 1960s, mono master tapes were used, with the sound engineers sending the mono signal through two audio channels, with the low tones on one channel and the highs on the other, and the both channels are played back slightly asynchronously so that a stereo effect is simulated.
