Bobby Scott (actually Robert William Scott ; born January 29, 1937 in Mount Pleasant , † November 5, 1990 in New York ) was an American pianist , vibraphonist , singer and band leader as well as arranger and songwriter in the fields of pop , easy listening and Jazz .

Life

In addition to his main instruments, piano and vibraphone, Bobby Scott also played the accordion , cello , clarinet and bass guitar . He studied with Edvard Moritz at the “La Follette School of Music” and was already working as a professional musician at the age of eleven. From 1952 he went on tours in the band of Louis Prima and took part in the 1950s a. a. with Gene Krupa and Tony Scott . He made his record debut in 1953 on Savoy Records with the March 15, 1953 single I Married an Angel / But Beautiful and the 7-inch EP Bobby Scott ; the following year he moved to Bethlehem Records and made his first recordings for the 10-inch album Great Scott there from September 21, 1954 , recorded in a trio with bassist Whitey Mitchell and drummer Bill Bradley . In late 1954 a. a. with Eddie Bert , Hal McKusick , Milt Hinton and Osie Johnson on an album with their own compositions. ( The Compositions of Bobby Scott ); further recordings for it were made in 1955 in Los Angeles with the West Coast jazz musicians Conte Candoli , Frank Rosolino , Charlie Mariano , Bill Holman and Jimmy Giuffre .

In 1956, Scott had his first singer hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with the song Chain Gang , which rose to number 13 on the charts . As a band leader, he recorded a number of albums for the Verve label ( Bobby Scott Plays the Music of Leonard Bernstein ), ABC Paramount , Mercury and Atlantic in the second half of the 1950s ; in his bands worked u. a. Bill Crow , Dick Garcia , Teddy Kotick , Jerome Richardson , Charli Persip and Nabil Totah . As a songwriter, A Taste of Honey , which The Beatles played on their first LP Please Please Me , won the Grammy for Best Instrumental Subject . In addition to A Taste of Honey , Scott was also involved in The Hollies ' hit He Aint Heavy, He's My Brother (1969) .

In the 1960s he worked mainly as a teacher and studied again with Moritz; occasionally he worked as a pianist on recordings, a. a. for Coleman Hawkins 1962, Quincy Jones ( Strike Up the Band ), Shirley Horn's recordings for Mercury 1963, Chet Baker / Kenny Burrell's Verve album Baby Breeze (1965) and Wes Montgomery's album Movin'Wes (1968). He also worked as an arranger for various musicians in the areas of jazz to easy listening, u. a. for Les and Larry Elgart . In 1989 he made his Nat King Cole tribute album For Sentimental Reasons , on which Bucky Pizzarelli , Steve LaSpina , Ronnie Zito and Jimmy Young participated.
