Teddy Kotick

Theodore John Kotick called Teddy Kotick (* 4. June 1928 in Haverhill ( Massachusetts ); † 17th April 1986 in Boston ) was an American jazz - bassist . He played with Charlie Parker and Bill Evans .

biography

Kotick started playing guitar at the age of six and later switched to bass in college. He began his musical career in the states of New England before settling in New York in 1948 . He worked with Buddy Rich , Buddy DeFranco (1949), Artie Shaw (1950), Stan Getz (1951–1953), Bob Brookmeyer , Al Haig in 1954 and sporadically with Charlie Parker . So on January 23, 1952, Max Roach wrote the title Begin the Beguine . Kotick also took part in the legendary Rockland Palace Concert on September 26, 1952. Another recording session took place on December 10, 1954; the tracks " I've Got You Under My Skin ", " Love for Sale " and "I Love Paris" were recorded for the album Charlie Parker Plays Cole Porter . It was to be Charlie Parker's last recording session for the jazz label Verve Records before his death.

In 1956 he participated in George Russell's The RCA Victor Jazz Workshop and was bassist in the trio of Bill Evans ; with him was his debut album New Jazz Conceptions . In 1957 he worked with Evans on the album A Swinging Introduction to Jimmy Knepper . From 1957 to 1958 Kotick was a member of the quintet of Horace Silver , then in 1959 in the band of Zoot Sims and Al Cohn . During this time he also toured with Claude Thornhill's orchestra and made records with Jimmy Raney and George Russell . In the 1960s Teddy Kotick worked mostly as a freelance and played with musicians like Martial Solal at the Newport Jazz Festival , with René Thomas , Teddy Charles , Herbie Nichols , Tony Scott and Phil Woods . In 1966 he played again briefly in the trio of Bill Evans ( The Secret Sessions ) in the New York jazz club Village Vanguard .

Since the early 1970s, Kotick lived in Massachusetts again. At the end of the 1970s and 1982 there were again recordings with JR Monterose and Allen Eager .
