Whitey Mitchell

Gordon B. "Whitey" Mitchell (* 22. February 1932 in Hackensack , New Jersey ; † 16th January 2009 in Palm Springs , California ) was an American jazz - bassist and author.

Whitey Mitchell was the younger brother of Red Mitchell . He studied clarinet, tuba and bass, and from 1954 played with Bobby Scott , Tony Scott , JJ Johnson , Kai Winding , Pete Rugolo and in the orchestras of Charlie Ventura (1954/1955) and Gene Krupa (1955). In 1958 he led his own trio and worked with Johnny Richards , Oscar Pettiford , the New York Jazz Quartet , Peter Appleyard and Benny Goodman (1963).

1964/1965 he worked in the Broadway show Fade Out - Fade In with and appeared with André Previn on a television show. From 1965 Mitchell worked mainly as a studio musician in Los Angeles . He was also involved in the recordings of Herbie Mann in 1956, Red and Blue Mitchell , Anita O'Day in 1966, Joe Puma in 1957, Gene Quill , Jimmy Raney and Betty Roche . Under his own name, he recorded the album Whitey Mitchell Sextette in 1956 on the ABC Paramount label ; his teammates include Steve Lacy , Joe Puma, Don Stratton and Osie Johnson . Mitchell also wrote articles for Down Beat magazine . He later settled in Palm Springs and began his second career writing for films, television series, and plays. There he died of cancer on January 16, 2009.
