Peter Appleyard (born October 26, 1928 in Cleethorpes , England ; † July 17, 2013 in Eden Mills , Guelph / Eramosa , Ontario ) was a Canadian jazz musician ( vibraphone , drums ) of British origin. He was considered one of the vibraphone stars of jazz and was one of the most important musicians in Canada.

Life

Appleyard, who was a nautical instrument maker, played music in his spare time. He started out as a drummer in local dance bands before performing with the Hawaiian Serenaders and various jazz groups. During his military service he was a member of an air force orchestra. In 1949 he went to Bermuda . In 1951 he moved to Toronto , where he switched to the vibraphone. In his playing on the vibraphone, influences from Lionel Hampton and Terry Gibbs can be seen. In the 1950s he played first with Billy O'Connor , then in bands around Calvin Jackson and in his own combos. From the end of the 1950s he also made frequent guest appearances in New York City .

In the 1970s he played regularly with both Benny Goodman , with whom he also appeared in Germany between 1972 and 1974, and with Peanuts Hucko . From 1977 to 1980 he was in charge of the CBC television show Peter Appleyard Presents , in which he and his own band presented changing guests. He also recorded with Ed Bickert and Rob McConnell, as well as Slam Stewart and Skitch Henderson . In 1990 he recorded two albums with an all-star cast for Concord Records . u. a. with Bucky Pizzarelli , Major Holley and Butch Miles . In 1992 he accompanied Mel Tormé on a tour of Japan, during which the CD Sing, Sing, Sing was created. He also made guest appearances in Europe with Tormé, Dick Hyman and Roman Dyląg . He has also performed with Moe Koffman , Fraser MacPherson , Diana Krall , Anne Murray , Oscar Peterson , Ella Fitzgerald , Tony Bennett, and Hagood Hardy.

Appleyard died at the age of 84 on his farm west of Toronto .

Awards

Appleyard was named officer of the Order of Canada in 1992. In 2007 he received the Satchmo Award . His album Swing Fever was nominated for the Juno Award and achieved gold status .

A highlight of his "live" appearances were his pantomime and musical parodies of vibraphone colleagues - he imitated a. a. Milt Jackson , Lionel Hampton , Red Norvo and Terry Gibbs in a diaphragmatic manner - the climax of his performance was the lovingly malicious portrayal of his favorite vibraphonist: Peter Appleyard ......
