Peanuts Hucko (born April 7, 1918 in Syracuse , New York as Michael Andrew Hucko , † June 19, 2003 in Fort Worth , Texas ) was an American jazz clarinetist and saxophonist of Dixieland jazz and swing .

Life

His nickname comes from his childhood love for peanuts. In 1939 he moved to New York, where he played tenor saxophone with Will Bradley (1939–1941), Joe Marsala , Bob Chester and Charlie Spivak (1951–1942). During World War II he joined the Army Air Force Band of Glenn Miller , where he umsattelte on clarinet. He also played clarinet in Miller's Dixieland Combo Uptown Hall Gang (the piece Stealin Apples of Fats Waller was from his Glenn Miller time to his signature tune). After the war he played with Benny Goodman (1945-1946), Ray McKinley(1946–1947), Eddie Condon and Jack Teagarden (including a European tour in 1957 with Teagarden and Earl Hines ) and worked as a studio musician at ABC and CBS until the mid-1950s . From 1958 to 1960 he went on a world tour with Louis Armstrong and his All Star Band . In the 1960s, he played regularly at Eddie Condon's Club and the Colorado Jazz Parties of Dick Gibson with the precursor of The World's Greatest Jazz Band ( "Ten Greats of Jazz" called). In the 1970s he took over the Glenn Miller Orchestra and played regularly on TV on the Lawrence Welk Show . In 1974 he opened his own nightclub "Peanuts Hucko's Navarre" in Denver , where u. a. his wife and singer Louise Tobin (ex-wife of Harry James ) and jazz pianist Ralph Sutton performed. In the 1980s his career experienced a revival, he toured as a soloist and with his Pied Piper Quintet . After that he withdrew increasingly and lived in Denton, Texas . His last album Swing that Music was released in 1992 (with his wife Tobin).
